i am currently using my pioneer blu-ray player as a transport to my rega dac and it does a very good job, only thing is it is a bit slow loading/skipping ect.. and i was wondering if buying a cheap second hand cd player off e-bay would be a solution, there are so many great cd player/transports out there its hard to know which way to go.

I was thinking of buying a high end player from yester-year and using it as a dedicated transport, now all i need is a short list!

I would like to spend no more than £200 and for that i would like a bombproof cd player with top specs/mechs if possible..

Any ideas???

Hi, I would suggest considering buying a laptop (you can probably buy a decent new one on sale for that kind of money) and use that as a transport. If you upload all your CDs onto it in Lossless format you wont get any degradation in quality from a CD player and the convenience of being able to use a media player such as iTunes or J River Media Center, Foobar etc to select a track to play is great. You can achieve bitperfect playback easily (the music file playback is unaffected by the laptop's processing card) and with near instant access to any song of your choosing. You can also get a remote function if you have an iPhone, iPad or iTouch.

I would never go back to a CD player personally.

I have never tried this combo, but I'd be tempted by a TEAC vrds model, as they are repairable, and indeed the transport is used in top machines like the Scarlatti.

There is only one on uk ebay for £300 right now but you might get lucky at around your budget.

Funny you should mention this: Last week I spoke to my usual dealer about the new Rega Apollo-R. Amongst other things we discussed, the subject got onto DACs. Told him I recently heard the original Apollo and he said my Arcam 73 would be as good as the Apollo (original) as a pure transport with the Rega DAC.

Whether that's just sales spew or not I couldn't say TBH. Certainly the Arcam has fabulous build, looks nice - and I would guess - would be a decent uplift in SQ over a Blu-ray player.

I'd read that it's meant to be a decent transport

he is right, there would be no difference between the apollo and arcam except the appearance, sound wise they would be the same or as near as damm it.

I do like the arcams and would consider buying one, ive got the itch to buy something and as usuall there is nothing about when you have the money..and everything around when you don't!

my dealer told me to save my money and buy £200 quids worth of music..i think he has a point!
