1. I am looking at buying a Peachtree Nova amp with either an Arcam R-DAC or a sonos ZP90.

The speakers I am looking at are: 1. Monitor Audio Silver RX6 ($1600 CAD, sound less impressive), 2. Silver RX 8 ($2200 - will demo these tomorrow, but maybe too big for the 80 watt Nova??). 3. Bowers & Wilkins 683's. ($1800, these I demo'ed with an Arcam A18 and A38 and I really liked their sound).

Can anyone guide me on the best choice?

2. I was choosing between getting a sonos zp 90 and an Arcam R-DAC, because I thought they served a similar purpose- to play music I ripped onto my laptop. Is there a big difference in what these 2 devices do?

Thanks for the advice

Hi Mike45,

The Nova already has a DAC built in so you wouldn't need the R DAC. I can't comment on the speakers as I haven't heard them. As always, audition before you buy.

Yes the only thing that the RDAC would give you is wireless connectivity (assuming you bought the wireless version) but at 400 quid, you may as well buy a Sonos ZP90 and stick it in the slot the Nova has specially for the purpose.

Heard one to-day - brilliant piece of kit!

The built-in DAC is better than many, and certainly the one in the Marantz KI Pearl CD player. The exhibitors did a check last night and found the one in the Nova an awful lot better. In fact, they used the Nova as a pre-amp as well, preferring it to the Marantz KI Pearl's preamp section.

They were using Chario speakers for the demo, and the sound had that liquid transparency you get with valve amps. The Chario Sonnet used for the demo I heard comes in at 3,500 euros, which give you an idea of the price level to which the Nova can be used.

Personally, I'd look at the Charios, the Canton reference series which I also liked, or Totem.

I would only consider speakers you can hear first with that product (which I like the look/functionality of)
