The A85/P85 combo is a cracker (I should know, I have it).

I upgraded from an A65+ and it's much, much better in all areas.

£630 isn't bad, but try to beat 'em down if you can. I paid about £500 for both of mine (not at the same time though).

The A85 will do a job for you... a satisfying one to boot.

Big Chris is a fairly lone voice when it comes to pushing the A85's talents. I concur with him totally: For £300 or so quid the A85 will give you something completely different. Nice.

In a word YES. the Arcam will do certain things others won't at the price, likewise, other makes will have their own unique talents.

All Arcams are fabulous when it comes to refinement, subtlety and detail but does not have the purist current which means they can struggle when it comes to driving 'testing' speakers, such as the makes I've mentioned before. This is where the power amp plays its part: It'll improve the bass response and give it more drive and midband detail. Arcams, probably more than most, flourish with a power amp. That said, if you have speakers that are easy to drive (generally 87dbs and upwards) the A85, on its own, will be fine.

The P85 makes all the difference. A85 alone is good, adding the P85 makes it great. And don't worry about waiting for a P85. I also had a good few months between getting the A85 and adding the P85.

Also, look out for a CD192 CD Player.:)
