With the old style 4:3 ratio screens the optimum viewing distance was always considered to be 1 foot for every 2 inches of (diagonal) screen size. However with 16:9 screens and HD this distance can probably be closer before the pixellation can be seen.

I would recommend you try this out with a mixture of DVD, HD (and standard TV broadcast quality if you do that as well) and find the closest distance where pixellation is not apparent.

Assuming the picture is professionally calibrated (NOT factory or 'showroom' defaults) and you have all the dodgy 'sharpening' and other gimmicks turned off I should think 32" will be OK. (My experience of 'sharpening' is that it just increases fringeing artifacts.)

I watch from 6 - 7 feet (about 2 metres) and my Samsung 26" LCD is fine (in fact it picked up a 5 star WHFS&V award recently!) but I don't use HD. (90 percent of my viewing is DVD and only about 2 hours of TV a week)

If you watch predominately HD broadcasts/Blu-ray then 40" will be fine but if you watch mostly DVD and TV then 32 may be better at your viewing distance.

You can easily go 40"+ from 2.5/3m away.I have a 46PZ80 from less than 3m away (about 9 feet) and sometimes I wish I had gone for a 50".One of my chairs is 5 feet awy and that is still fine.

Don't even think of getting a 32", it will be far too small in a week or so of purchasing. 37" is borderline but I would go 40"+.

I speak from experience after buying (and wasting a load of cash) a 32" Panasonic LCD (too small).I replaced this with a 37" Panny plasma, which looked ok for at least a couple of hours untill it shrunk. Now I have the 46"er, and even my wife admits that it would have been another mistake to go for a 42".

As you can see from responses it is a personal decision based entirely on how you use the TV, how much you use it and the precendence it takes in terms of you and your partner/family/friends etc.

We turn the TV off at the drop of a hat if someone is being disturbed/distracted by it. Someone may want the radio on, or music, or be playing cards, reading, talking etc etc so TV is very much bottom on the 'pecking order' hence we only have a need for an 'occasional' TV. We simply don't watch it as a family and I am happy to watch a DVD at the back of the room with my headphones plugged in.

You must prioritise for yourself based on technical requirements, distance, room layout how much you use it, social/family requirements, budget etc.

I sit about the same distance from my TV and bought a Panasonix TH37PX80 about 6 months ago. It's a great TV and doesn't dominate the room, but I now know a 40" or 42" would have been better, especially for movies, as the picture quality is so good.

Andrew Everard:I'm with Oy on this one (he said, watching the BBC Electric Proms in HD on a 50in from about 3.5m as we speak)

To quote the BBC HD schedule guide for tonight's Electric Proms....

"Pull out your white suit and get ready to throw some disco shapes..."

So now we know :)

(Got the glitter ball out and the chest wig and the gold medallions?)

Sorry to disappoint, but was watching the Maddy Prior one previously recorded. So more smocks and finger in one ear...
