Option 1 : I am connecting my Sony DVP-NS78 straight to My LCD TV via HDMI cable and using optical cable from DVD to my Onkyo 506

Option 2: I am connecting my Sony DVP-NS78 to Onkyo 506 with HDMI and then another HDMI cable from Onklyo to my LCD TV

Please someone tell me which one is better in term of picture and sound quality.

Hey kweq,

AFAICS, there should be no difference in picture quality between these two options since the Onk 506 only passes through video signals and does no upconversion or upscaling.

If you perceive PQ to be better by connecting HDMI straight to the TV, then do that, but remember that means changing inputs using the TV remote and Onk remote separately, which could be annoying (assuming you don't have an universal remote). But personally, for the sake of convenience, I'd just connect HDMI to the Onk then HDMI to TV, provided of course that you have two decent HDMI cables.

And remember, you have to connect via optical to the Onk at ALL times (with BOTH above options) in order to get sound through your surround speakers, since the 506 model can't strip audio from HDMI at all.
