I use the Linksys WRT160N (I think it's called). I use it with Sky and I expect you know that you have to do some googling as Sky don't allow you to use anyhting but their own routers. It's easy enough and the Linksys has been perfect for me - had it about a year.

I use a Netgear DGN3300v2. So far it's been a good router. It's used for internet / gaming / Sonos plugged into. Can't comment on sky as I don't have it.

It also is dual band so it covers b/g as well.

Sorry, my router's correct name is Linksys WAG160N. I've just checked prices for it and it amazes me how a product can divide opinion!

thank's for the info guys i have been having problem, i think i have to replace it with the one mentioned in sites

Well after some research i have decided to opt for the following modem router and some home plugs

Billion BiPAC 7800N Wireless-N Modem Router

Billion BiPAC 2073N Wireless-N HomePlug AV 200 Wall Plug Ethernet

Billion P104 BiPAC 2071 HomePlug AV 200

I am hoping this will give me a decent speed throughout the house, so we will have to see.

They seem to have had some really positive reviews in the computer mags. I also have a friend who works for a computer company and he mentioned them to me, but in honesty when he mentioned Billion i thought the same "Never heard of them". Proof is in the pudding though and we will see how they perform.

Anything has goto be beter than this Belkin N+ thing i bought, its not been very good at all.

Hi did you get the Billion.I have spent hours reading up on routers and decided to get the same one. Read hundreds of users reviews on the so called good ones, but found people having lots of problems but none on the Billion. How has it been?

did anyone get the Billion router???

I am struggling with this whole router/modem thing. I am progressing from a BT Home Hub 1 which has a modem built in but can't understand why all the best routers are without modems. I have some old USB modems but presume this is slower than ethernet connections. What options are there to get a top spec router but with modem functions too.

I bought this Billion router (click) about a month ago and it's been rock solid so far. Also, have read pretty much nothing but good about it from other users.

What do you mean by modem? If you mean an ADSL modem, virtually all routers have them built in as standard. If you're talking about an old dial-up type modem, why would you need this if you have broadband? A dial-up modem would normally be included in your laptop, or you can buy one which will fit into one of the PCI slots on your PC.

In the three and a half years we have had wireless, we have only used the Apple Airport Extreme 802.11N. Never had any problems with range or reception.

There might be better devices. Luckily I don't need to find out.

I went for the best of both worlds, as I have some devices that are stubbornly 54Mb/s, and got a dual band Netgear WNDR3700. It's an a/b/g/n router, running at both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz, with 5 gigabit ethernet ports (one for the cable modem) and a USB port, which you can plug any USB drive in and share it across your network. Seems pretty solid. You can run the b/g at 54, 108 or even 300Mb/s, but I run it a 54 as this seems to give me best lower speed coverage...

some are advertised as

for example Netgear Wireless N Router with built in ADSL2/2+ Modem DGN2000

Others are referred to just as a router and There is no built in modem for connecting to the internet with this device.

I run ADSL broadband and am not sure if I need the former or can use the latter? thanks

Okay then, yes you do need the ADSL modem in the router in that case. However, there is a lot of choice of routers which have this included so you shouldn't get any issue as long as you read the description. The Billion mentioned above definitely has one.

I am not going to be much help to you Barnsleydave, but you might help me please. What are the items that you have chosen? I can see what they are on the links provided but apart from the router I am clueless on what the other bits are for.

I am just looking to stream media from my computer upstairs to my TV down stairs. I will use the Sony BDP 770 as the gateway which has the wifi built in. My present router/modem is not powerful enough.

PS I have read the sales description for these other two items - the ethernet switch and the other thingy and I still didn't get it.

thanks

The other items are a home plug and a errr....well I'll call it an extension switch or maybe a splitter.

All the extension switch is, is something that will enable me to put 5 ethernet cables into one - like a extension lead.

The home plug is something I have been advised to buy by a few people which boosts your wireless reception. It works by plugging one master unit directly into your router and the other gets plugged into the mains in a room where you have another wireless device. For me I have a computer in a room upstairs and the performance is shocking. If i bring it downstairs its fine, but upstairs forget it.

Hope that helped.

Hi, Following this thread I bought the Billion 7800N last week.

It is brilliant and reaches to all parts of our large and rambling house and seems to cope with:

4 wireless PC's, 2x wired PC's, iphone, itouch, wireless airport express, wireless printer, a NAS, Wii and Bluray (wired into airport express which picks up wireless signal and converts back to ethernet).

It has also increased the download from the exchange from 3616kbps to 5600.

Well worth the money.

Hi

iam looking to upgrade, at the moment i have the standard sky router, is there any problem just replacing the sky router, iam quite interested in the comments about the Billion 7800N.

Thanks

Andy

derby - You will still keep the sky router, but just use it as a dumb modem, as the sky broadband login details are hardcoded into the firmware.

- give the sky router a static ip.

- turn off the wireless and dhcp on the sky router.

- plug the sky router into the WAN port of the new router.

- set the default gateway on the new router to be the static ip of the sky router.

and away u go, plugging all ur devices into the new router, and the new router is the wireless access point.
