Okay... what hard drive should I buy to install in my PS3?? Professor Hat's tutorial is so good I'm gonna do it. So which are the best, I'm just concerned with reliability and speed and the brands out there mean nothing to me. What name should I buy?

Thanks Ray! Well, I've been in the IT industry a while (over 10 years now) and the names Seagate and Western Digital constantly come up with regards to reliable hard drives (hence why I chose the one mentioned in the review!). However, there are a number of other players such as Hitachi and Fujitsu that can't be ignored.
Lacie hasn't been a good experience for me (and many others from reviews I've read) but I'm not sure if they make internal drives - I had a USB drive of theirs that failed. You can always post what you're thinking of getting and, if I'm around, I'll comment on my experience of that make of drive.

I'd recommend Seagate. I've got six Seagate Barracudas in varous machines around the house and not one has failed or given me problems. The last one I bought came with a 5 year warranty which is very welcomed. Before that I had Maxtor hard disks. I think they are complete rubbish - I had 3 fail at various times just outside of their warranty period.

Six hard-drives around the house??? You must live in some futuristic wonderland. What brand of jetpack would you recommend?

Honestly though I think Seagate gets the nod. I'm eyeballing the 320gb, presumably the same one Prof.Hat used. Although I may just wait a little bit and go for the .5tb when its price inevitably falls. That's a lot more flac.

Incidentally, I've decided to slap a Beresford onto my PS3 and save myself the expense of a new CDP. (Only for those albums I cannot find on vinyl ofcourse.) Is this going to be up to snuff?? Presumably transport-related flaws will disappear?

Please don't tell anyone I've been posting in the computer music area...:)

Ditto Western Digital or Seagate, though Samsung are getting a good reputation as well. Any branded drive (like Freecom, Iomega, Lacie, Buffalo, QNap etc) are likely to have those brands in them anyway.

I use three WD external FireWire harddrives to back up each of our home systems (my 'work from home' system, the iMac and the Dell PC upstairs.) No problems at all yet.

I said 6 Seagate hard disks not 6 in total! The total hard disk count is currently 12 in two desktop PCs, two servers and one laptop. Total storage: 7.62TB.
