hi folks..

im considering getting a dynaudio excite centre speaker, its ex dem and going for a good price, the dm centre is about e100 more as id need to order a brand new one..

i understand that the excite range is more demanding on an amp than the dm range, so im wondering if my yamaha rxv-765 would be able to power the excite centre suffiiciently? i dont mind paying more for the dm centre, but i wouldn't mind saving a few bob too, they both look similar enough, and are both 4 ohms..

any thoughts? ta..

Max, you're taking a risk asking your 765 to drive 4 ohm speakers in my opinion. Remember my agonising over the Dali Suite package, and that would have been using a more powerful AVR (for what it's worth, I'm still slightly gutted I didn't say what the hell). Since the centre channel carries the most information, I think you'd be placing a strain on the Yam, which would likely run very hot.

It's sensible to speak to Yamaha beforehand, though you'll probably get the same response I did: "It should be OK, but we can't guarantee it". Yamaha have to say this to comply with safety regulations, but it leaves you none the wiser as to whether you're likely to encounter a problem.

If you're looking at 4 ohm speakers, your plan to look at older, high-end AVRs probably makes more sense...

I agree with SFC, and I would hold fire until your settled in with the Dyns. Once your ears acclimatise to the new'uns then seriously look at a centre cone. Think it'll be a horrible combination with the Missions. This is info coming from a total numbscull when it comes to centres and surround sound...

strapped.. it was your old thread that got me thinking about the issue, well, potential issue with 4ohm speakers, ive decided not to go down the older avr road tbh, having just bought a sony s370, i may think about upgrading my current one though..

i think ill ask my dealer for a home demo of the excite centre next week when i pick up my fronts, id say he'll be ok with that, if i like the sound and my yamaha dont get too hot i guess ill have my answer..

pp.. the little missions wont be serving as rears, they'll be going in a cupboard somewhere till i need them again, i may try and pick up a very cheap (think e50 each) amp and cdp for a little bedroom system for them.. if i do decide to get some rears they will be 2nd hand el cheapo dynaudios (if i can find any)..

The try before you buy policy is a good one. I wish I was on such friendly terms with a retailer, but I think your expenditure on all things hi-fi/AV outstrips mine...

Easy does it though. I'd stick to reasonably low volumes to begin with and see how your AVR copes.

, so a home demo shouldnt be a problem, ill see how things sound when i get my fronts, if 2.1 isnt doing it ill try the excite, if he still has it..

That all sounds too familiar. Must of taken a leaf out of Merchant Bankers in London. Keep safe, Max.

"they haven't a clue what they're doing"

Au contraire, they knew exactly what they were doing, they just weren't concerned in the slightest how their actions impacted on those less fortunate. And I'm being kind... their actions were/are possibly even more callous and mercenary. Oh well, we can all watch The X Factor as a form of distraction/passification.

they had no right to guarantee the debts of the banks, that was a huge mistake, in doing so they may appear honorable, and irelands credit rating will be good in the long term, but the price we as a country have to pay is far too high..

they need some radical thinking, starting with defaulting on the banks debt, we as a country didnt cause this mess, it was caused by the greed of a select few who decided to partake in risky lending on a massive scale, why should they not get their filthy rich fingers burned?

anyways, its friday night, and i believe a wise man once said there's no point worrying about things you can't change
