Bought a new AV amp and got it home Friday, for me first thing to check out was the Stereo, Once that was done turned my attention to AV setup, ran the Audyssey auto EQ, went in and reset the distances, got out the SPL meter and reset the Levels, always run rears about 6dB up, I left the EQ initially and got out a couple of DVD's for a listen but felt it was a little Bass light, I could turn up the Sub but could not change the auto EQ speaker settings, I had to copy the Audyssey settings in to the Preset EQ and up the Front and side speakers below 250Hz.

OK back to the purpose of the post, when I get out DVD's to check my system out (Or to show the system off to friends

) I usually use the same scenes, I start with the Matrix Foyer scene, some great effects with shell casings dropping on the floor all round you, sometimes then I go to the opening scene of Blade II in DTS, I get out Titan AE the Ice field scene in both DD & DTS if I want to check out Bass/Sub levels there are some really good low bass in there.

Do you have favorite scenes you use if you are setting up a system or just showing off.

Opening scenes from Saving Private Ryan are sure to impress.

I also have 'The Up In Smoke Tour' DVD (helps if you are into Rap) which sounds excellent in surround with massive bass and brilliant surround steering.

Jay-Z and Linkin' Park - Collision Course, also sounds amazing!

The battle scene from Master and Commander. You can here them running across the top deck (your ceiling) and the Cannonball coming in on the LH Speaker. The rest is just awesome.
Star Wars Revenge of the Sith chapter 3 Escape from Coruscant. Good workout for the Sub and allround sound.
Star Wars Return of the Jedi where Jabba the Hut gets blown up gets your sub going. (I thought my house was falling down)

That first battle scene from Master and Commander is awesome in DTS. I also love the scene in Apollo 13 when the Saturn 5 takes off, its almost as though your lounge is about to lift off.

I use "flyboys" for BOTH PQ & AQ to show off my system, the PQ on this movie (bluray) is outstanding & the AQ (DTS master audio) is some of the best iv'e heard, its an absolute monster of a soundtrack, aeroplanes flying all around you is so realistic, wonderful bomb explosions, machine gun fire its brilliant all rounder.

Also "transformers" is good for both also, especially the opening scene & the last 45mins of the film is a great tester.

When i want to check out the colours for my tvs i always use "red planet" as it has wonderful shades of both red(naturally) & blacks.

I also use for demo, Casino royale (opening chase scene), The day after tomorrow, King kong (fighting the 3 Trex) Die hard 4 (especially the scenes were Bruce is in the lorry with the fighter jet chasing him) thats an awesome soundtrack tester.

I don't actually have this on DVD but I was very lucky and got to see this scene in the Dolby Labs own Cinema, they have a custom built underground Cinema at their design office, When the cannons went off the Bass actually felt like you had been hit by a cannon ball.

Also Cant believe I do not own saving private ryan.

Indeed. It's in my top ten fave films list, may even nudge its way into my top 5.

I remember the first time I saw it, on my old Sony HCIAB. I had it cranked during the scene near the beginning in the fog, as all there were were quiet creaks from the ship.... Then 'Lucky Jack' sees the cannon flash in the fog. When it hit the deck my GOD it was loud...... Great stuff.

I really like the scene in Apocalypse Now where theyre in the helicopters going to devastate that village, you know the one "Why do you all sit on your helmets?", "So we dont get our balls blown off". The helicopters sounds switch from inside the helicopter to outside with them all around you. All packaged with a some pretty hefty explosions and a soundtrack of Ride of the Valkyries.

Master and Commander is one of my top 5 films and IMO is a great portrayal of life in the navy in the early 19th century. Remember that life in the navy was not all about fighting, you had more chance of dying through illness, injury or shipwreck than you did in battle.
I have also read 19 of the Patrick O'Brien books about Jack Aubrey and have the last one to read on holiday this year so I am also probably biased towards the film.
The surround sound throughout the film with the rigging creaking etc is very good and the battle in DTS Master Audio sound is superb.
It's a god job we all like different things.

The helicopter scene in Mission Impossible 3 ( I think that's right) when they were escaping through the wind farm was also good for all round swirling sound.
There are also good scenes in The Dark Knight and Iron Man but as I do not own copies of these I cannot say which scenes they were.

All the assorted flight/crash scenes in The Aviator. The sound of a properllor shredding itself and a whole bunch of nice red roof tiles either sounds just right, or not at all. If it sounds right, then I leave the system setup well alone.

The opening sequence of Dark knight on BluRay is always a crowd pleaser, as it's shot in IMAX and fills the screen as well as the soundtrack filling the room.
Some wicked sub-bass action too, truly a dynamic showcase.
I also used to use the speedboat chase in TWINE (The World Is Not Enough) for aural delight.
But if you're talking about setting up a system technically, then I always start with the Monster Cable demo disc for video, then the DTS showcase DVD for audio.

After which, small tweaks to personal taste then bake for several days.

Mmmm, yummy!
