I am looking for a piece of kit that will play music directly from a USB stick or similar. I don't want to spend more than £300 and would try to buy used for less than that. Are there any suggestions, does such a thing exist?

I know of a few universal disc players that do this but, unfortunately, you are unlikely to get them for your budget.

Some have a USB port to attach portable players like iPOds but they don't play directly from various USB stick.

There's quite a few.

Denon DCD 720AE, Pioneer PD10, Yamaha CDS300. I'm sure there are more.

look for japanese all in ones from marantz ( m-cr510) or denon.. or a/v receivers..

I don't think they play directly from a stick. Could be wrong. Certainly the Marantz is iPod compatible only.

Correction: the Denon Ceol RCD-N9 information says it does although this is not strictly a CD player as queried by the OP.

Available within his budget though.

You're correct, there's more than I first thought when you dig deeper.

All the Marantz CD players that have a USB port on the front definitely play from a USB stick, this includes the 6000, 8000 and MCR series, plus their network players too.

With a budget of 300£ it's a no brainer Marantz CD6005 alone the fact that it's the cdplayer of the year in it's pice class for the 3 time doesn't make it hard to choose which one to buy

It's good but does it actually play back from a memory stick?

All Marantz say is 'made for iPod / works with iPhone'.

EDIT: Forget above, just found a review that says it does work with 'thumb drive', must be American. :)

This would be the one I would recommend, in its case.

One thing to look out for is the audio format that these players can read from a USB stick - many will only accept WMA and MP3 files, nothing more.

More expensive universal players tend to accept pretty much all file types - ALAC, FLAC etc. It all depends how your music is stored.

The Marantz kit will play from a USB Stick but don't expect any great flexibility. You can play "all" or you can skip around from track to track but there isn't any way (that I can see) of finding specific tracks.

Iam using a pioneer BDP-450 blu-ray player cum universal player, which has two usb ports which accept both usb sticks and external hard drives. It can also play movies on the side, with unerring picture quality and the sound is also great. However, on the down side it does not have any analog outs. Only 2 HMDI outs, one coaxial and one optical out. So far it has played pretty much all the formats i've thrown at it.

just looked on the marantz website the usb will do the following formats MP3 , WMA , AAC , WAV and will connect up iphone ,ipods only not the ipad as it uses more power for some reason and i did see that some USB mermory devices are not all gurantee to power up if useing a portable USB hard drive so all of the marantz CDplayers in the marantz range will be the same in what formats they can handle
