The problem is the networks don't tell you when 4G is going to be available in your area, they just "announce" that its happened

In the meantime I picked up a Moto G over Christmas to see what all the fuss was about and I'm loving it!

Actually, they do. I knew in advance when EE's 4G was coming at my work place. Even Vodafone has already indicated that 4G is coming here in 3 months.

With regards to Vodafone - as I've just checked - their coverage checker says "There is no 4G planned for this area".

This is Stratford-upon-Avon, not the sticks, but all the networks IME tell you nothing.

Edit: Unless you're possibly already on their network maybe.

In reply to JD.

Personally I'm looking at the non big name handsets running Android that are available via ebay. Big savings over the known brands and the same spec if not better in some cases.

worth noting that generally only the nexus range of phones will have full google backed support. All of the others require manufacturer/carrier updates. that means that if a manufacturer decides to, you won't get an update for your phone unless you go down the custom rom route.

Sony's new phones are damn fine, but their lack of support with updates in the past has been a tad slack to say the least.

Just something to think about.

That's all changed with Motorola.

Price is a major consideration. I don't need my phone to do many things, and I strongly suspect the Motorola will do all those things rather better than an iPhone 4 running iOS7. I hovered over the 'buy' button of a Nexus 5 for quite some time but in the end decided it's actually bigger than I would like, so saved my money.

My iPhone 4 has just got stuck thinking it has headphones all the time, which means I can't make calls without headphones in, which is a serious PITA. This, combined with the fact that iOS7 has made it run like a dog, is the last straw. Which Android phone can you recommend? I love the look of the Sony Experia Z, which has just been slashed down to £330, and the Nexus 5 is the obvious alternative, but what about the Moto G, which seems a serious bargain? Is that a player or is it going to annoy me by being too slow?

I went for the Nexus 4 then the Nexus 5 and now eagerly awaiting the mighty Nexus 6. Half the price twice the power. And to cap it all for £7.50 PCM I get the usual text, free minutes and data etc. Why on earth pay any more? Simples!

As an aside, with the money I saved (well, that and the unbought Kate Bush tickets), I felt obliged to buy this:

I can't get Exchange ActiveSync to work, either with the stock mail client or third party ones like Nine or Touchdown. My helpdesk are not being very helpy because it's my own device. If I can't get work mail on it it's not much use to me...
