Question What's your next HiFi purchase?

A preamp, or an integrated with a preout option (specifically thinking a recapped and serviced NAD for nostalgic reasons).

And found one. I'll let you know what it's like when I've given it a spin later next week!

Edit: and the good thing is, if I ever feel like clapping hands on a pair of original Mission 751s, I'll be able to given them a blast as well.

I'm thinking only about peripheral things now. My main components are all locked in so I'm thinking about those minor tweaks which might add up to some sort of tangible improvement.

My speaker stands as an example are a budget set of Kanto's; will I *actually* get a different experience with something costlier for my Neat Petite's?

I've also got those Neat's on blobs of Blu-Tack on the stands. Do "proper" isolation pads actually do more? How? Why?

No interest in stuff like bespoke power sources as I'm convinced that's just an audiophile trap from stalking marketeers.

Neats on poor stands is like a Ferrari on remoulds….!
I’ve got some DALI M601 and some SolidSteel SS-6 stands…. The difference is night and day…..
Then, there’s the issue of how much filller !!!!

A Fiio M21 digital audio player for Xmas: trialed and returned JadeAudio JM21 and HiBy R4 as well

Remarkable, connected to my Rotel A12's PC USB input, in the M21's extraordinary desktop mode

Biggest advance in sound for me since 1985 when I went separates and went British with a Cyrus One and Mission 700s (both alive and well)

From Cambridgeshire, England to Guangshou, China innovations in 40 years

Recently I purchased micro sized CD player SMSL PL150 and I wasn't too happy with the sound, it was a little brittle in the top end. Amy Winehouse high pitched vocals was like razor blades in your underpants.
I was so use to the majestic Marantz SA8005, the SMSL was disappointing in comparison. TBH, I wasn't really comparing apples with apples.

The unit only came with a usb cable, no AC/DC power supply, so I was using a generic 5v 2amp psu and I think that was the problem.

You know the saying, in for a penny, in for a pound. My BRZHiFi linear power supply arrived today, I couldn't wait to hook it up and try a few CDs.
I left it on for an hour to warm up.

Amy was first, I had the lubricant ready but this wasn't necessary. It was like listening to a different CD player, the sound had really transformed.
It was more than decent, I was really enjoying my CDs .

If you're buying budget, make sure you invest in a decent power supply.

It didn't stop there, my WiiM Pro Plus had the same treatment, I had lying about a spare Lenovo laptop power adapter, that had a variable voltage 5v to 24v. Replaced the cheapo one with the Lenovo. The difference wasn't as great as the CD but gave some sparkle to Spotify.

I better get back to work, before they fire me! 🤣

Don't think 3 months can be classified as "recent", but here we go. I first read about Ascilabs A6B in January last year after Nuyes megatest and knew it had to go on my audition list as the speaker fit the Spinorama profile I was looking for to go in my lounge. I took delivery of these in October, fell in love and haven't looked back. I currently have them set 60cm off the back wall, around 2m away set 15 Degrees off axis (toed out) to my seating position in a new build house.

The only small hiccup I've had so far is with the Topping A90D when using as a pre-amp. The volume curve setting (which can cap the HDR) also applies here like the setting can for Headphones and needed to be set to 1 from the default 5.

Next on the list (when i've saved up some money and offloaded some of my headphones) is a set of Dan Clark Audio - Probably Ether 3.

Nice choice of speakers! I’ve been fascinated by the brand since reading thr reviews on ASR. Are you in the UK, and did you buy them direct or from a dealer? (I only know one in the UK).

Any pics would be great, or some idea of positioning, stands etc.

Hey nopiano.

Yes I am UK based. I got them via the UK dealer Purite Audio. Emailed Keith and told him what I was after. No issues. Good experience.

Attached is a pic of my setup. It almost looks generic, but from Spinorama measurements and advice from Ascilabs when they were asked in ASR, this is how they should be setup. I set the speakers up with the tweeter at ear height. As these extend down to 30Hz with the Purifi woofers I don't need a sub in this new build (The soundbar and sub is for when I'm not using Ascilabs).

The off axis performance of the speaker works perfectly in this environment for me. Whether I'm using them myself, watching something with friends and family sat next to me or behind the sofa at the dinner table, the setup works great.

Whilst the S6B is technically the better speaker (being Purifi all round), the preference for that is a direct on axis response. Pointing the speakers directly towards the center listener with those would then mean others sat next to me either side would get a slight cross-fire experience, and my house isn't big enough to be able to utilise and set them up properly with how they would need to be ideally positioned.

Thanks! That’s a very impressive set up, and you’ve obviously chosen with care. It looks great and I’m pleased you’re enjoying it so much. 🙂

A bit of insomnia last night led to a slightly manic decision that I want to try planar headphones. I know Jason rated his, and a few other people have mentioned how much they liked them, so thought I’d see if they turn me onto headphone listening more at home.
