I have ready many threads about the sony kdl40w4500 vs the 4710 and also the samsung tv's that were exclusives to dixons comet etc.

so i know this may sound like a stupid question but with the sonys and the samsungs they are usually made in the same place at the same time and have the exact same specs but the only difference is that a digit in their model number has been changed, so how is it possible that they can give very different results when being viewed?

also i have read someone talk about a tv having a response time, can anyone explain what it relates to and why its important?

thank you

With some sets, especially Samsungs, that change of digit can indicate a version made to be sold exclusively by a big multiple chain, but in the case of Sony TVs the change of letter - eg S V W X or 4000 4500 and so on - shows a change of specification, such as picture processing technology, or generation, which of course can affect performance.

Response time, in milliseconds (ms), indicates how fast the TV reacts to changes in the picture content, so the faster the response time - ie the smaller the number - the better for fast-moving action.

thanks for the speedy response.

so take for example the csae with the samsungs, the change of a digit indicates its an exclusive to a big chain, but in theory you have 2 televisions the same, one sold by the big chain, one sold by an independant retailer, the difference being the code, but the specs vey much the same.

so how is it possible for the two tvs to give very different results?

john lewis have the sony kdl40w4710 which has the exact same specs as the award winning kld40w4500 but we are told that they may not be the same even though they have the same specs. even know on the jl website they call the tv the sony kld40w4500/4710!!

are we to assume that they are one and the same if they have the exact same specs or are we to judge each screen on their individual showings?

thanks

Never, ever judge a TV's performance on its specs alone- for starters, so many 'measurements' like contrast ratios are largely meaningless.

In our testing, we have found some quality differences between sets pupporting to be identical, but with different model numbers for different retailers. Maybe it's merely down to the manufacturer allowing tolerable levels of performance-variance in its quality control - eg a TV will perform at least to standard 50 and up to standard 55 - or perhaps certain retailer-specific models are being built to a price: eg the premium models are going to retailers who'll charge a higher price.

But this is speculation- getting either a manufacturer or retailer to reveal the detail behind such deals has so far proved impossible.

The good news is, TV quality is improving year-on-year, and you can now buy more flatscreen performance for your money than ever before.

does that mean then that the sony kdl40w4710 that john lewis have at 1100pounds is better than the sony kdl40w4500 which other retailers have at 900pounds? given that they are identical in spec and build etc?

It's possible - but then JL prices are typically more expensive than other retailers anyhow (but then you do get a five-year warranty and generally v.good customer service...), even when the model number is exactly the same. Plus, John Lewis has said it's exactly the same set: if it was offering something special, i'd expect it to say so!

well my 4710 did offer something special no dead pixels and no clouding and the slightest backlight issue that really is nothing at all!

i didnt say it had all this good stuff on the box but i knew there had to have been a reason i paid that little bit extra!!
