Hi all,

I am relatively new to hifi and wanted to get opinions/advice regarding whether a single upgrade would allow me to get more out of my system. I am currently in no way dissatisfied with the sound, however with a bit of extra cash to spend i am wondering if i can improve the sound. I listen exclusively to FLAC music stored on my PC and have tried to keep the signal path as short as possible. My setup is as follows:

  • PC (16/44 and 24/96 FLAC)
  • USB->SPDIF: M2Tech HiFace (BNC output)
  • Beresford Caiman DAC (used also as preamp)
  • Roksan Caspian M Series 1 Stereo Power Amp (85w/channel into 8ohms)
  • B&W 685 Speakers
  • B&W FS700 stands

As for cables I am using a Bluejeans digital coax, Nordost blue heaven analogue RCA interconnect, and Nordost Flatline Gold MK1 Biwire speaker cable (the latter two bought cheaply off ebay).

I am not sure how well balanced of a system this is and have some ideas as to what would be the next step(s), but I would like to get other opinions. I will likely be looking to buy something second hand off ebay to open up more options. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Sounds like a nice system. I suppose the upgrade choice would depend if you're looking to just improve the sound or add some new functionality / convenience to your system (pre-amp with a remote control or streaming for example).

can't specifically offer any advice, but a couple of thoughts crossed my mind when i saw your system. the power amp could probably do justice to some much better speakers, and it could probably use a better preamp while it was at it. you'd probably have to spend quite a bit to significantly better the dac. that's a lot of probablys. an idea of your budget and what you hope to get from any upgrade may help people pitch in.

Yes should have mentioned that. upgrade would be purely for SQ, the functionality is fine for the moment

as for the budget i would like to spend around £1000-2000

As Stereolad has said, that is a very good system. What is your budget as I think you need to start spending £1000s to make a noticeable step up.

This seems like a well thought out system with a sane amount of money.

A dedicated preamp would be a nice addition and a logical step. A little experimentation with cables might give you fuller sound and imaging.
