Two fantastic albums, although I possibly prefer Andy Shepherd's second album. Must play some more jazz here, I rarely do at the moment.

By the way, the record shop which opened last week in my local town has some copies of Miles Davis (Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain) and a few John Coltrane LPs. They're around the £12 mark, so not 'audiophile' or anything. Do you know anything about the quality of these pressings. I'm not keen on buying reissues if I can avoid it - would much rather have originals - but originals of these are silly prices, so might be tempted if the advice is that they're good quality.

That is the only Andy Shepherd I have, will give his second one a listen. Unless it is a recent release, early 90s on then all my jazz is reissues. Music On Vinyl are very good, the Miles ones tend to be on this. The Coltrane ones on Impulse are also good. Blue Note are in the process of reissuing to mark 75 years, I have Dexter Gordon's Go and Our Man In Paris, both high quality.

had today off to sort a few things out and go swimming with our 7 month old boy (he loves it). Been able to do some vinyl:

Oasis - Definitely, Maybe

Oasis - (WTS) MG?

Ben Watt - Hendra

Tricky - Adrian Thaws

Metronomy - Love Letters

Thurston Moore - The Last Day

The Blue Nile - Hats

Herbie Hancock - Future Shock (bought this 2nd hand and was dirty and very crackly, a spin in the Knosti and looking and sounding good as new!)

Black Metal - Dean Blunt

I'm ranting and raving, to anyone who will listen (not many, so far!), about how wondefully strange and austere this album is. For anyone curious who hasn't heard this I'd liken it to a Tricky wannabee fronting a band of A Certain Ratio acolytes. And somewhere, faintly howling in the grooves is the cosmic, crippled yowl of Mark Hollis. (Enough!!!! - Pseud's Corner Ed)

And:

Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? - Of Montreal

Kevin Barnes' third or fourth masterpiece. He's so careless these days. Makes Ryan Adams look like the posturing, soul-less buffon he is. (And I quite like Ryan really).

Not enough or too much to drink. And it's only Tuesday morning. Suppose I'd better pop along to the education factory and see what's being processed today.

That Pseuds Corner review tempts me, Charlie. Not so much the tricky wannabe, but the other bits sound intriguing. I'll try to check it out.

This afternoon:
New Order – Vinyl Solution (live in Sunderland, 1984). One of the better bootlegs.

I've had a bit of clear up of records that have been dumped in various rooms throughout the house; they've been packed into the relevant boxes in the loft and some new boxes have had to be created. Problem is, as I'm going through stuff, I see things I'd like to hear and actually bring more down than I took up which I guess defeats the object. Not that I care: I have no targets and goals these days. These are some of the clutch that I brought down:

John Martyn: 'The Tumbler'.

The Mothers Of Invention: 'Freak Out'. mono and stereo.

Frank Zappa etc: 'Lumpy Gravy'.

Dwight Twilley Band: 'Dwight On White'. mini lp on white vinyl. Utterly brilliant.

Captain Beefheart: 'Safe As Milk'. mono.

Curved Air: 'Air Conditioning'.

Johnny Thunders: 'So Alone'.

Donovan: 'a gift from a flower to a garden'. mono boxed 2 lps.

Soft Machine: 'Third'.

The Church: 'Hindsight 1980-1987'. double lp.

Bill Evans:' The Paris Concert Edition 1 +2'. Bill never played better and there is unbelievable empathy with bass and drums. Marc Johnson is wonderful on bass.

Elvis Costello And The Attractions: 'Armed Forces.'

Neil Young: 'Eldorado' Australian mini lp.

...and a load more scattered all over the place.

Hi,

It's certainly an intriguing album. I'm very taken by it. Engrossed.

For what it's worth, I'll amend my ACR reference to include a more prominent Vini Reilly sound in the mix. Less dextrous for sure, but very evident nonetheless. Moreover, the album feels like an artful collision between rudimentary craft and maximum expression. A jewel covered in muck.

I don't know that New Order boot but it's the same year I saw them during my student days. I even got into the late afternoon soundcheck and shared a KFC bucket with Stephen Morris. Shameless name drop over!

Wow Jim, what a great collection of strewn all over the place LPs you have!!!

I've drooled over your Eldorado before (I hope my wife doesn't mis-read that sentence) but I'm now salivating further over your FZ and Cpt. Beefheart monos.

Thanks, Charlie. I thought that you may like a few of those. I've found an 'Absolutely Free' US stereo which I can't even remember buying! I knew I had a UK mono but I thought that was it Oh well, I'll have fun comparing them tomorrow...how sad!

The 'Safe As Milk' mono is rare...I haven't seen another one but it's not mint: most of it is lovely but there's an annoying tick on the first track and it won't go away however I clean it. Oh well, you get used to these things when you collect old records.

The Mothers' 'Freak Out' records play well despite looking a bit battered; I had to fix the sleeve too which I actually like doing; I love cleaning old records and mending sleeves...the tattier the better! Some people want mint copies of old records, but they're so hard to come by, especially if you've reached the stage where the stuff you haven't got is very rare like mono Mothers' records. I just buy 'em and hope for the best.

So put your tongue away; they're not that desirable!

Regards. Hope the sausage factory job is going ok.

I had a mono copy but it was badly scratched. Would like to hear it 'properly' in mono. Apparently (according to the Beefheart nerds), the UK mono mix is different from the US mono mix. I'm lucky enough to have an original US Buddah pressing but in stereo, with the trippy inner sleeve but unfortunately without the bumper sticker. Still, it sounds pretty amazing. I did have a mono copy of Strictly Personal, but unfortunately in those days I didn't realise that mono mixes could sound quite different (and sometimes better) than stereo mixes, so when I managed to buy a stereo copy I sold the mono one. More fool me.

Right, now that I've sent everyone to sleep...

On many occasions, but by no means all, UK mono mixes of US releases are fold-downs of the stereo whereas the US mono often has a dedicated mono mix. 'Safe As Milk', the UK version in mono sounds like a fold-down to me, although it's loud, clear and meaty as many mono lps are. I've got a mono and stereo 'Strictly Personal' and this is one of the few instances that I prefer the stereo.

I don't have anything like an original mono of Safe As Milk, but I do have the Simply Vinyl reissue of it, which is a double album with quite a few extra tracks. I did have the Marble Arch reissue which was a mono album, but chose the Simply Vinyl reissue over it when I was running out of room in the filing.

I think that the Simply Vinyl reissue is the best way to listen to that record and the bonus tracks are brilliant, especially the stuff that would appear on 'Strictly Personal.' I think it's easily the best sounding version of the album. I used to have the Marble Arch 'Safe As Milk' too; I wonder where it went!

I've got the 'bonus' tracks on those SV reissues of Safe As Milk and Mirror Man on a CD called 'I May By Hungry But I Sure Ain't Weird', and you're right, they are fantastic. What a shame Bob Krasnow smothered the album with phasing before releasing Strictly Personal.

Which is your current mono copy, then? The Pye (of which I think Marble Arch was simply a budget reissue), or the US Buddah? I'd be interested to hear the Buddah one.

Thanks for the info on US vs. UK monos.

The mono copy is the original Pye blue label issue. A shame that Bob Krasnow smothered 'Strictly Personal' with phasing? I know Beefheart said he was angered by it, but I think it enhances the music; ok, occasionally, it's a bit too much, but by and large, I think 'Strictly Personal' is a great record. Having said that, listening to the pre-doctored versions on 'I may Be Hungry But I Sure Ain't Weird' is a real treat too. This was Beefheart's most creative period for me, although I like 'Trout Mask' etc.

Yes, Freddy, it's a great record but I don't think it's neglected or overlooked as such; it's highly regarded by critics and by those of us who were there at the time: I hope that you don't get down and dirty and do the rattlesnake shake whilst listening!

Danny Kirwan's songs, singing and beautiful guitar work help to make this an engaging listen; in my opinion, this is the real tragedy of Fleetwood Mac: the sad tale of Danny's alcoholism and homelessness. Clearly an extremely talented and sensitive soul, listen to 'Bare Trees' or 'Future Games', he's all but forgotten now. Addiction and emotional damage are par for the Fleetwood Mac course, but Danny Kirwan's fall from grace is particularly moving and desperately sad. I, for one, would have loved the chance to hear more great music from him. It really irks me that he has become a footnote in the Fleetwood Mac story, despite carrying the band through 2 or 3 albums which knock the likes of 'Rumours' into a cocked hat.

This morning:

Cocteau Twins: 'Treasure.' A perfect compliment to the glacial beauty outside. An icy jewel of a record
