I've tried unsuccessfully to post this under a 'new topic' 3 times.

Still an interesting little clip from the BBC News website I stumbled upon blurry eyed this morning.
On the tracks of Australia's last record maker
There's been a resurgence in sales of vinyl in recent years - but in Australia there's only one company still making discs with a vinyl press.

It means business is booming for Zenith Records in Melbourne.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

I think that's really interesting. Thanks for posting. I don't think it's off-topic at all: only yesterday, I posted a socialist rant in the 'Hifi' forum. Nobody replied to it of course or even acknowledged it! It was about CSJF's electricity bill since he got a valve amp. We need more real world stuff in these rarified forums.

Look at the photo on the cover of 'It Don't Bother Me', Charlie. I think you could a novel out of that picture or at least an impression of the radical British folk scene in the 60's.

Yes, that picture is very evocative of a time and place unknown to me, but glimpsed in the nether world between the grooves and the backdrop of the photo shoot.

Recent listens:

Light Up Your Spliff - The Bush Chemists

The "White Album" (stereo) - The Beatles

Dub Feast - The Congos

Groovy Decoy - Robyn Hitchcock

Limerick Negotiation File & Intergalactic 12"singles - The Beastie Boys

Crazy! Baby - Jimmy Smith

Theo Parrish's Black Jazz Signature

Evidence - Domino label sampler

Zep I

Where The Spirit Meets The Bone - Lucinda Williams

Aah . . The Name is Bootsy, Baby - Bootsy's Rubber Band

Peanut Vendor Dub - Sammy Dread 12"

US Male - Elvis Presley

John Prine debut LP

At Dawn - MMJ

(played at dawn, almost)

You are correct, imo. In large part, I find this place either sterile, or all hell breaks loose. There doesn't seem to be a sense of community, which is a shame. This is why I don't post much.

Have we had a 'Best Record Covers Evvah' type thread? I can't remember one and can't be arsed to trawl back through the pages. I'm currently listening to 'The Best Dressed Chicken in Town' by Dr. Alimantado, which I'd like to nominate. Fabulous album, too.

Been listening to lots of reggae over the past few days, inspired by recent discussions here. Lots of CDs, then today I've dusted off the vinyl.

The Abyssinians – Forward to Zion
The Congos – Heart of the Congos (took a punt on this after a recommendation by Big Bern)
Burning Spear – Marcus Garvey
Yabby You – Deeper Roots
Lee 'Scratch' Perry – Roaring Lion
Gregory Isaacs – Cool Ruler

Yes, I like it a lot on first listen. Thanks for the rec. I wouldn't say it's the best reggae record evvah (from today's pile, The Abyssinians and Burning Spear are better), but it's got a good vibe and some good songs. The production seemed quite muddy and indistinct, though. Too much colly, perhaps. I'll see if it sounds better after cleaning.

The song 'Children Crying' is one I know and have on some record or other, but I just can't think who by. It'll plague me until I find it.

Added one more under the needle before switching off:

Misty In Roots – Earth. Another classic.

Which copy have you got, anything other than the Blood & Fire reissue is supposed to be quite poor soundwise?

I'd also highly recommend the Jackie Mittoo album I've listed above, I just love it. I could listen to the track Juice Box all day and still love it, but the rest of the album is great too.

I've got the Go Feet version from 1980. Don't tend to do reissues unless I can't get the original. Anyway, must go - speak soon.

Continuing the reggae plays:

Dub Feast - The Congos

Heart Of The Congos (CD version)

The Roots Of Dub - King Tubby

Then:

Crazy! Baby - Jimmy Smith

Go Feet is a reissue too, and probably a better pressing than the original, though the B&F is the one to have. Like Charlie, I have the B&F CD, and it sounds great, just wanted it on vinyl. I have the Go Feet vinyl, but it's not really playable, though it was free after the seller gave me a refund.

If I could find this record I'd be the happiest man in the world.

'Earth' Misty In Roots is a wonderful record, but then again all of their records are great. The 12" of 'See Dem A Come' is on youtube...utterly utterly magnifique mes freres.

Black Uhuru day tomorrow I think.

Yeah, that's wonderful. Sounds like Traffic with a better rhythm section. If I see any of his records I'll buy them....another door opens!

Cheers BBB.

Yeah, the Parlophone Gold and Black stereo goes for huge amounts of money. I've got an early mono copy and I love it; the stereo holds no interest for me at all. It's not that rare either: they're always on ebay so it can't be. I guess it's just because it's The Beatles.

Yes, my daughter likes this. It's rather lovely in the best possible way. Sweet voice and nicely arranged. I'll give it another go in the morning when I've got more time. I'll report back.

Thanks, BBB.

Thanks, BBB.

There's a couple of duff tracks, but on the whole, it's wonderful stuff. Ranges from really funky (Don't / Beatmaker), with fantastic bass, to lovely Swedish pop, similar to The early Cardigans stuff (Grey Rains Of Sweden). My faves are probably Whispering Pine, Daisies and the title track.
