Hi all have just purchased a td mk1 in great condition,am loving the sound but wish to change the tone arm, only thing not happy with…any suggestions?
No, they’re different. You might find a cheap SME on another vintage turntable is cheaper than an arm alone. Local sales are where the bargains are - once on eBay with a specialist they’re mush costlier.Cheers for that, an arm board cut out for a sme arm was supplied but as you say quite expensive. Would any of the other options work with the sme cut out?
Cool, will check that out, cheers. No, they’re different. You might find a cheap SME on another vintage turntable is cheaper than an arm alone. Local sales are where the bargains are - once on eBay with a specialist they’re mush costlier.
hi am looking at a linn basik, anyone had any experience with these with the td150?Origin Live offer arms with SME cutouts
Cheers, the l vx looks pretty descent , not done any internal work ie fitting a tone arm, is this process easy enough? The Linn Basik arm had several iterations, with typically confusing labelling. There was was an early S-shaped arm and a later LVX, but probably others I don’t recall.
Lots of info here…http://www.hoth.uk/LP12-FAQ.htm#arminfo
I would say no if you have never done it before as getting arm placement and correct height is critical. If you can find a dealer to do it for you.Cheers, the l vx looks pretty descent , not done any internal work ie fitting a tone arm, is this process easy enough?
The AT is a terrific cartridge. The Goldring 10xx series is getting on a bit but they’re very decent. They’re also the basis for Linn’s least expensive cartridge, the Adikt.I have a at vm95sh cartrigde, but considering a descent goldring , although not sure if they will fit a linn basik…any thoughts or suggestions?
Great, so you’ve got a good base to begin with. Bear in mind that the contemporary SME 3009 are four or five decades old, so choose carefully. My thorens has been fully serviced including the motor chasis and wiring, before I bought it, everything seems o.k, just the tonearm isn’t great. Thinking of the just saving and getting a sme as the table came with an extra cut out plate for a sme upgrade.
cheers, will do. 👍Great, so you’ve got a good base to begin with. Bear in mind that the contemporary SME 3009 are four or five decades old, so choose carefully.
Just a thought..is the sme 3009 considered a better arm than, say the linn basik lvx?cheers, will do. 👍
I would say yes.Just a thought..is the sme 3009 considered a better arm than, say the linn basik lvx?
I would agree that the Linn would be easier to set up and would be sufficient for this turntableI agree with Al, though it’s not quite so simple. Whenever was Hifi simple, especially turntable-related?!
The Linn arm is easier to setup and adjust because it has limited scope. It would suit your AT fine. The SME was pretty much state of the art for twenty years, but needs care and understanding, not to mention a full set of instructions and every part present and working. Those latter conditions are hard to meet 50 years on.
