Depends what your budgetis and maximum size of stand mounter? A good starting point is the Wharfedale Diamond range. Currently Richer Sounds are selling 9.0 for £50 or 9.1 for less than £130.
It seems a lot of people have the Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom paired with this wonderful Micro system and they do sound great. However, I have recently connected a pair of Wharfedale 9.1 diamonds, that I had spare, and I think these are an improvement especially in the mid-range. Both of these wonderful little speaker should be witnin in your budget and if you shop wisely you might be able to pick up a pair of Soundstyle Z11 speaker stands to mount them on!
right just found some more money for the speakers. was thinking tannoy custom f1 , whaftedales 10.1 or monitor audio bronze br1. speakers will be sitting by the wall. will this affect the sound?
I'd get yourself some Diamond 9.1s - £100 from Superfi - and spend the rest on a descent set of stands (Atacama, Soundstyle Z2 about £50). If you've got stands already save yourself the £50!
