I am looking for a cheap 5.1 setup (or 3.1, I have rears lying around) that can play music and films well in my living room. I also have 60 cm stands for front available should standmounts be a better choice.

I have been looking at the Onkyo 607 which is being given away these days at crazy prices. What speaker package would you buy to work with it within a 1000£ budget?

Monitor RX1 + Center and my rears, or???

I am open for suggestions.

I have a 'Bose Acoustimass 15' speaker system for just such a purpose, and have been absolutely delighted with it.

the Onkyo 607 is good amp for movies, but not very musical, Denon and Yamaha are much better.as for speakers if you are going to keep the MA then look for the rest of the range. If you want a sub/sat lifestyle package then the Tannoy Arena-lites would fit the bill, imho much better then the Kef 3005se and MT 30's.Only problem is that they discontinued and don't come with stands and grilles which are very expensive. If you can find them cheap then i would also add the Yamaha amp for a decent set up.

I'd go for a Marantz amp if you're interested in films and music.

I'd also second the Arena as a style setup. Head and shoulders above anything for films and music I demod up to and including the MT-30. Well worth a listen.

Arena has come with Arena sub and TS300 from Arena highline 300, (pretty similar subs). There were some deals at one time with the TS500 from the Highline 500 which I bet would be an amazing system.

Been totally happy with the Arena with TS300 sub and Marantz SR6001 for films and for music via Sonos. It's an impressive system all round to my ears with great detail and treble, tight bass, and a sub that feels totally integrated.
