About 3 years ago, I upgraded various elements of my set-up. I now have an Audiolab 8200CD, a much-loved (and recently fully-serviced and refurbished) NAD 350 Amp, and Tannoy Revolution DC6 speakers. All connected with good Atlas Interconnects and QED XT40 cable. My question is where to updrade next? If I had to replace one element (and that is pretty much my limit, budget-wise), what should it be? The one retailer I discussed it with suggested the speakers were the weak link (which was a pleasant surprise: I thought he'd suggest a heftily priced amp!).

Any thoughts?

Hi drzonker,

I'd agree with dealer who suggested a speaker upgrade, your CD player and that NAD amp can cope with better speakers - perhaps you should think about auditioning some speakers up to the £1000 mark depending on your budget - preferably get a home demo and at least using your amp and CD player - I'm sure there is much more to come from your other equipment.

Cheers

'A heftily priced amp!'

Something of the stature of the Hegel H80 or, as a less expensive option, one of Boggit's (IPL Speakers) uprated Abrahamsen integrated.

You'll have to listen for yourself though, I find budget Tannoys unlistenable.

If your happy with the amp and like the way the Tannoys sound I would upgrade speakers to something like the Revolution XT6F or even XT8F if your room / budget is big enough.

I too find the cheaper Tannoys somewhat lacking.

Nad 370. Those speakers can sound substantial with good quality amplification. (Based on Precision 6.1).

The preponderance of opinion seems to point at the speakers and I see there are some fairly strong opinions about Tannoys! My first ever sepakers were Kef Codas (the Coda 7, I think) and I lvoed them. I was thinking about auditioning the Kef R300, which seems to have wowed many owners to judge from this forum and others.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggested alternatives?

Try some speaker stands, and get your speakers in the optimum position. Might just show you the potential in those little tannoys.

I have speaker stands, although I haven't gone so far as to fill them with sand or grapeshot.

Different school of thought everyone looks at the boxes for upgrade.

Have you looked at your room ? You could add treatment to your room for a big sq upgrade. Free advice from GIK

Another area is mains - some on here are anti mains products like cables but I am very much pro - home demo of an isotek titan or Aquarius or similar would be worth a look for you.

Both of these especially room treatments will improve the overall sound
