I am considering buying a new Tv and dvd player but would like to stick to my existing surround system due to budgeting reasons.

My current surround kit consists of Mission cinema speakers and a Pioneer C502 receiver.

Is it possible for me to connect this to the new tv/dvd and continue to enjoy 5.1 output? The Pioneer does not have HDMI capability but has optical.

I would appreciate your comments and, if possibel, an idiots guide to connecting the Pioneer to the tv/dvd (i.e. leads)

Many thanks.

ps the tv/dvd I am thinking of is Sony 46HX723 and Sony S580

There should be no problem. I would buy a Bluray player rather than just a DVD player. Connect this to the TV via HDMI and the optical out from the player to the optical in on the Pioneer.

You will then get 5.1 DD or DTS sound but not HD sound, but at least you will not have the expense of a new receiver.

Thanks fo your advice.

The Sony S580 is a BluRay player, apologies for not making this clear.

What if I throw sky box in the mix?

No probs, from what I can see, your Pioneer has one digital coaxial input and two digital optical inputs. So connect the Sony S580 into your Pioneer via digital coaxial and your Sky HD box via optical - this leaves you one optical free.

EDIT - just saw you want the new Sony TV connected too, so you can connect this to your spare optical port.

Time to revist this query!

I have now purchased a Sony 46Hx923 with a Sony s580 Blueray player, but as before I am keeping my old Pioneer C502 AV receiver - for now.

The guys at Sony advised that for 5.1 connectivity, all I needed was one optical lead going from the Pioneer to the tv and it should take care of DTS sound etc automatically - is this true? Or is it better that I connect my bluray to the receiver via coax (sony bluray player does not have optical) and sky+hd box via optical? :?

Note: I do not intend to use 5.1 all the time - just for sports and movies. I have a 2.1 soundbar that will do the trick for normal viewing.
