thanks for that bit of help, almost bought the cambridge audio 540 January last year, but stupidly decided to hold off as i expected them to have a new one out by now, never happened! Was beginning to think no one else had space limitations, would love to be able to buy purely on what i can afford, as things stand its an old CA 340,540, NR 1501 or an all in one system which i have now and thats about it. Will have to bite the bullet and see if i can get a demo down at richer sounds.

For what it's worth, I too have the Marantz NR1501 which I use with a Mordaunt Short MS902s, a Mordaunt Short Alumni centre (ie. no sub), PS3, Humax Freesat PVR, Marantz CD Player (can't remember which one) and Panasonic 42PX70 TV. Like a lot of others, the 1501 is perfect for me due to space constraints and I bought it to replace a similarly sized Cambridge 540R V2. In my opinion, it delivers a very good performance and is a definite step up from the CA receiver which I also thought was pretty good (aside from lack of HDMI in this modern age!).

Interestingly, the Marantz is only rated at 50WPC whereas the CA is 100WPC but I would say that the Marantz is louder if anything. I had been considering the purchase for a while when the Marantz was sold by Richer Sounds at £400 but was waiting for a What HiFi review - in the end, Richer dropped the price by quite a large lump and I therefore decided to go ahead anyway and don't regret it one bit. As an aside, I believe that Marantz have now announced the successor to the NR1501 (ie. the NR1601).

Hope this helps.

That's where I was referring to... but didn't want to specifically mention it. Picking mine up on Saturday as it's been transferred from another store. Very few left in their branches now.

Thanks for the replys like you was hoping for a review of the Marantz NR1501 but when richer sounds dropped the price i thought what the hell, its worth the risk. Unfortunately 4 weeks later and i havent heard what it sounds like as i still dont have any speakers, though 2 weeks on saturday that should be sorted! had another thread running on what speakers to buy they had to be small and under £400 but as of yesterday richer sounds sent out their e-mail offer and the Jamo A102 package is now down to £199 so again cant resist. Hopefully the end result will be worth while. At least it will be a step up from my pioneer all in one system!
