basshound: 7 infections, any idea what they were doing while on my computer?

Trying to spread itself like most do

1 or 2 of those youve either installed or the computer was hit with a 'drive by' script (The 2nd easiest way to get infected is to visit and 'infected' site and if 'scripts' are allowed (Like they are in internet explorer) then it will auto install the trojan/malware

Personally I use FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin to stop these

Due to you having trojans id suggest as follows ~

Download COMBOFIX
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Follow the simple instructions. Then copy and paste the log to RAPIDSHARE ~

http://www.rapidshare.com/

Leave a link for me to look at to see if all infections have gone or advise what to do next

(ANYONE ELSE READING THIS PLEASE ***DO NOT*** RUN COMBOFIX)

Hi Erik,

I am not confused in one sense- but if you run said spyware doctor, the phrase pctools appears above the icon, which is why I made the proviso in a previous post about nomenclature.

I am on the point of changing to Kasp as it appears the best of the paid world as far as I can establish, but I will still continue with the free add-ons to be sure.We are relatively clean here but I can see how easy it is to succomb to virus if you do not do a bit of homework or are not into this kind of thing.Keep on posting your AV messages -you can never get enough warnings .

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies.

You are all right, I have no previous dealings with home computers as never had one.

So in summary, when I switch on the computer and add the internet dongle, I can then go to the net and down load the programs you recomend for free, then bobs your uncle, no (or alot less) nasties coming into the computer when I download things?

I will be surfing the net, internet banking etc etc....

I know I am a pain, but never having a computer before is a bit cr4p, and my mates think I am living in the ice age!!

Also,

As the computer has Microsoft Vista home premium, and that has anti-virus and firewalls, do I need to uninstall these ones first, beofre adding say PC Tools, Avira or Kaspersky 2009?

If I do, how do I do it etc....?

I would use the Vista Firewall and Windows Defender already installed and add Kapersky Anti Virus to them. Kapersky and Defender run fine alongside each other with no trouble. It works fine in my case. My advice etc came from Alien Rik, JD etc a while back, and was much appreciated. Did a scan yesterday and i"m clean hooray.

What about adding another fire wall, say pctools instead of vista firewall?

Also, avira is free and meant to be quite good (looking on the net reviews), but kaspersky is £15 or so. Is it worth going with the free one and will this be able to run with Vista?

Sorry for the novice questions...

I know many people bash Norton for being a resource hog and slowing down PCs but in my experience recent releases are not a problem and compare very favourably with other brands.

You can get an OEM (i.e. no instructions but these are all on-line anyway, no fancy packaging - probably more eco-friendly!) from the link below for only £11 as compared to £35 on the high street.

kenda01:i use windows firewall without any issues so less of the microsoft bashing please. if people use common sense when surfing the internet and downloading files they will have no problem.

Excuse me!!, I'm not Microsoft bashing but Windows firewall (XP) offers no outbound protection and with the best will in the world Spam / Viruses are a fact of life and if you are relying on commom sense when ptotectin is cheap/free is not something I'd recommend. especially in households with more that one user/children.

Hi 'pot' boy!

We'd need to know whats already on as a trial. usually its Mcafee or Norton so use the relevant removal tool (WHEN you have the other software ready to install)
Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

or

Use the Norton removal tool
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Now the software itself is down to wether you want to pay or not

Id personally suggest buying 'Kaspersky'

Its pretty cheap on amazon but im sure it could be found even cheaper elsewhere. Buy a 2009 one and you can upgrade it for free to 2010 using kasperskys own site (Not thats its particularly needed)

Kaspersky has everything you need + a few other bits (firewall, anti virus, anti spyware, anti spam etc etc)

If free then id suggest PC TOOLS FIREWALL (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
UNTICK the option of installing 'THREATFIRE' too (another antivirus program)
http://www.download.com/PC-Tools-Firewall-Plus-Free-Edition/3000-10435_4-10625321.html

and AVIRA antivirus (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

To be safe when using the net (regardless of whats used) id use FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin

Download FIREFOX
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

NOSCRIPT (USING firefox)
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT5/intl/en-GB/index.html
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it findsA few things you need to know ~ Avira DOESNT scan emails. If you want an email scanner then youd need AVG or AVAST anti virus programs (Both slower and neither as good as Avira with its virus definitions)

You dont NEED noscript, but if a site got hacked and a virus put on the page then its possible youll get infected and not even know it (this DOES happen and happened to a site I went on to buy my av amp!)

NOSCRIPT is by far the safest way to browse the web. I could go on a KNOWN infected webpage and know that I wont get infected whilst noscript is blocking it

Both are right in a sense. Id rather have a 'decent' 3rd party firewall than windows though

I see BOTH as some well known firewalls (AVGs, NODs etc) are very poor in that hackers can get right by them without the user even knowing. So in that sense its SAFER to use windows!

Kasperskys is rock solid. As is comodos, zonealarms and pctools (All free)
