Hi, baffled person here, know very little (almost nothing) about hi-fi systems - please be gentle with me.... Ok, looking to buy a new mini or micro system. ( I appreciate separates are better for sound quality but that's out -various reasons- so don't try to persuade me in that direction please !)

Just want to play CD's & my old vinyl collection, no Ipod stuff etc, but I think that not all mini/micro systems allow a record deck to be connected up ? Hoping someone can tell me what I need to look for to ensure I can do this - is it by any chance a `phon input socket' ? - just guessing !

Any other advice appreciated (other than get an ipod docking whatever it is thiny, and telling me to buy searates.....) too. I want as good a system as I can afford but can't go above £400 really I'm afraid. Thanks in anticipation.

You will need one of this Cambridge Audio 540P

in between your record deck and one of this...TEAC CRH258i

On the paper, you should get very good sound for less than £400

Thanks for the suggestion Thaiman.

Been doing a bit of armchair window-shopping on the www & am finding myself drawn to the Denon DM-38 DAB... reviews seem pretty good. Atm I have an old Aiwa Z-1100. Dunno if this Denon will be as good/better ? I'm guessing better ?

Also seems to me I'll be able to plug the record deck (from existing system) into this Denon ? I've noticed pretty much all the reviews on the Denon are people listening to ipods, wondering if playing CDs & viyl on it will be just as good a sound ? Sorry - told you I didn't know much ! Wondering if I ought to ask all this on a different thread - ie where folks are posting about the actual Denon itself. Gee this is all confusing - well it is to me.

Thanks again for the reply - can't get the smiley things to work or would use one now !:)

surley all u needed was a set of aux leads , red and white , i had this problem years back when i bought my 1 st decks , i plugged the leads in the relevant red andcwhite holes then putvtge hi fi to phono and nothing worked.so i just switch tge hi fi to aux rather than phono and it works fine ,if ur hi fi has the red and white input holes then itll work ,,just try all tge different hi fi modes , , failing that ,i go in via my mixer , plug tge leads into tge mixer then plug mixer into hi fi , witg my first decks thecwoulddnt work when i wentvstraight to hi fi , then as soons iwebtvin via mixer , worked fine , but the simple option is to just see wgat your input holes like then jusr buy the converter that fits the output leads from your record player thees loads of differentvones

2 points:

1) This is a FOUR year old thread,

2) If the turntable has a built in phono stage then you can go into the aux input, otherwise you need the phono input or you need a phono stage somewhere, in your case your mixer probably has one built in (there's usually a switch to change the input from line to phono depending on what you've got plugged in, I've got a dirt cheap mixer and it has this facility.

Oh, 3 points: the "H" key is to the right of the "G" key, you seem to be having some trouble finding it.

No, "admin" appears to be some kind of placeholder account name for accounts that no longer exist (although it's not the same as "anonymous", I don't know what the difference is).

Like I said, it's a four year thread, really don't think it's worth all the effort it's costing you to try to post these responses, the person who asked the question isn't here any more, for a start.
