I didnt realise that it was a good idea to take an album im familiar with until i went to Phase 3 last week.

Now I've decide to take Surfer Rosa by the Pixies in the future - I think a system that can do a Steve Albini mix justice is a decent system...

But what do you guys and gals take?

Moving Pictures - Rush; Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell; Fumbling Towards Ecstacy - Sarah McLachlan; O - Damien Rice. One hint I got recently - also take something you think sounds rubbish on your system (hence have added Elbow - Asleep in The Back).

Five is too many tbh, I just get confused.

La Luna - Sarah Brightman

Aura - Asia

Fly By Night - Rush

Brightman for the vocals, Asia for guitar and Rush to really test a system as this album is not the best remastering on the market and is quite old now. I`ve noticed one or two salesman`s faces drop when I`ve put this on and what they thought was an infallable system suddenly doesn`t sound quite so infallable. It probably doesn`t help that the first two albums I`ve listed are newer and both superbly produced. However, as I`m very fond of Rush it`s important for me that it sounds as good as possible.

I take a wide collection of music that I know every single detail to, and listen for an performance that will captivate me!

Oasis (poor production, but I listen to it so must be listenable) classical (usually Yo-yo Ma and some Mahler), Yusuf Islam (brilliant production) and Nirvana - well you've got to have some fun.

Forgot - also some French, German and North African music, which, since the people from our sceptred isle never move beyond the Anglo-American, isn't worth mentioning since no-one will have heard of it.

I took a PC and DAC to my last audition with a selection of my favourite tunes ripped Losslessly.

Always take Robbie Williams - Angels, 30 Seconds to Mars - Stronger (from the Radio 1 Live Lounge), Propellorheads - On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The Prodigy - Voodoo People, Aimee Mann - Nobody Does it Better, Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire, The Ting Tings - That's Not my Name.

VoodooDoctor:Aimee Mann - Nobody Does it Better

Ooo I love Aimee (ever since she backed Rush's Time Stand Still. Shall have to dig that one out.

(Mrs D wouldn't let me call our daughter Aimee though....)

JohnDuncan:VoodooDoctor:Aimee Mann - Nobody Does it Better Ooo I love Aimee (ever since she backed Rush's Time Stand Still. Shall have to dig that one out. (Mrs D wouldn't let me call our daughter Aimee though....)

They could have made a really brilliant video to go with that song. It`s in my head but sadly only in my head!

Time Stand Still you mean? They could've yes, but obviously chose not to.......

(edit - I didn't know Alan Shearer played the drums)

Tarquinh:
ÿNirvana - well you've got to have some fun.

ÿAhh cool. I have to agree with that. Which album?

I pop the laptop in the laptop bag and the Beresford DAC just fits nice and snug in the padded side pocket.

I have pretty much everything I normally listen to then.

Joni Mitchell - Night Ride Home
Phil Collins - Face Value
BB King - Let The Good Times Roll
Yes - Fragile (Joe Gastwirt 1994 remaster)

I feel a bit self-conscious to be honest, as a lot of what I like is not "normal music" - but it's what I listen to so I've to take some of it. I do get strange looks and once had quite an angry reaction to some music I've played.

X2 on taking rubbish sounding recordings, people tend to overlook this.

ÿwow, now i am interested into what you listen to!

as long as there are instruments and no one died as a result of the music it cant be that bad...

Hehe - very loosely it's a form of improvisation that sometimes goes under the not very helpful term "electro-acoustic improvisation" EAI for short - think atonal, austere and very abstract (well all music is abstract really) imagine the musical equivalent of Mark Rothko or maybe Barnett Newman's paintings.

There are some instruments but they aren't played/used normally, as well as the use of equipment to make sounds, e.g. samplers (without any samples), mixing boards (with the output fed into the input, to create a feedback loop). I'm being very general, as this form of music is constantly changing and challenging itself and is genuinely innovative.

A good CD to checkout would be Sachiko M/Toshimaru Nakamura's "Do" even though it's getting on and doesn't represent what's going on now, its still a brilliant record but a real mettle/patience tester for some.

I am not aware of anyone being harmed or otherwise listening to this music, so far.

Sounds interesting!

I always take Tom Waits Real Gone as i think its quite 'muddy' on a not so good system.

Usually some Nick Cave and Lord of the Rings, then a couple of random cds too.

Massive Attack, Angel from Mezzanine. For the opening bass and other noises.

Ash, Oh Yeah from 1977. Because it is a poor recording.

Pink Floyd, Summer '68 from Atom Heart Mother. Because of the timing changes and accoustics.

Something new, so that has been everything from The Fun Lovin Criminals to Neil Young to Peter Gabriel.
