Sky HD is max 1080i; BD can do 1080p

Sky HD outputs Dolby Digital 5.1 at best, but only over a digital audio link (over HDMI it's stereo only); BD can give Dolby True HD/DTS-HD Master Audio/uncompressed multichannel linear PCM at best.

I did not know that, I will go buy a optical cable as well.

So let me get this straight.

HDMI can stay in and the optical will be the audio and they will work side by side?

I thought HDMI was the best for sound and vision,

Indeed, so if you are running everything in HDMI via an AV receiver with onboard HDMI switching, you need to assign the optical digital input to whichever source selection switches the HDMI input through to the TV.

Of course, you could just run HDMI direct to the TV, and an optical connection from the Sky box to whatever your surround system may be, but that makes switching a little clunkier.

canada16: I thought HDMI was the best for sound and vision,It is normally, but it's a limitation of the SkyHD boxes that doesn't allow DD over HDMI..

I am going to buy one.

I got a pioneer VSX 819

Will just continue with the HDMI and plug the optical in.

In the settings it says DD and stereo at the moment, so will they then both say DD?

Sorry to be a pain.

No, because you can send stereo over the optical link should you wish. You have to change the optical digital out option to DD to get surround, and then the box will send DD when the content has it, and stereo when it doesn't

Is there anything on the horizon to improve on this ?

I switched to the optical, and it still has the dolby sign on the amp, but sky tv guide is saying its not DD.

I doubt BBC wales is in DD.

I made sure the amp was set to the optical lead, and the settings say Stereo at the top as it wont allow for DD, and at the bottom DD.

So I am not even sure its working.

sky hd movie channels give you dolby digital + sound (640kbs) where sky + boxes on sd movies gives you 448(448kbs).If any of you want to try it give it a go switch between sky movies sd and hd the sound is more detailed on hd.
