I am looking at buying a new 50 inch tv and have NO MORE than £1000 to spend, i am not interested in internet or 3D compatibility although the later would be nice for the future, i just want a tv with a good picture for freeview and movies.

I'd say your best bet would be to pick up a Pioneer PDP-LX5090 plasma TV second hand - I've seen them for around £1000 in classified ads in the past. You won't get anything with a better picture quality than that for that money.

Ok, well seeing as you are coming from a panasonic plasma then why not go for the latest 50VT30? You would have to increase your budget, if that's not possible then consider the mid-range G30 or GT30 if you want 3D as well.

We've got a Group Test of 3D 50in TVs - all but one of them plasma - coming up in our next issue, and several are available for under £1000.

That issue is on sale 30th June - in shops and to download as a digital edition. Subscriber copies will be posted out next Friday.

If you can't wait that long, then - on the back of strong performances so far this year - i'd take a look at Panasonic's 2011 plasmas. The 2D Panasonic TX-P50G30 can be had for under £1000; its 3D sibling - the Panasonic TX-P50GT30 is available for just over your budget.

Thanks for your your replys, i have been looking at the samsung ps51d6900, how does this compare to the panasonic tv's you have mentioned.

You'll need to wait for our Group Test to find that out :)
Forgive me if I'm being dim (fairly normal for me!) but I took that to mean that the PS51D6900 was meant to be part of the group test?

Are there any plans to test this set? I'm waiting for it to come back in to stock at my retailer, but I'd rather not buy a duffer so I'd love to know what you guys at the mag think of it.

I would recommend to demo the LG 50PZ950T. http://m.lg.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-3d-tv-50PZ950T.jsp
This is LG's flagship plasma TV. It's also THX certified 3D. It's almost within your budget as well: http://m.lg.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-3d-tv-50PZ950T.jsp http://www.directtvs.co.uk/LG_50PZ950T_50_Inch_3D_Plasma_TV_50PZ950T/version.asp?refsource=dtfroogle

Just wondering if Clare or anyone from the team could comment on whether the Samsung 51PD6900 is indeed going to be in a group test, or if you're having it in for testing at any point?

AFAIK it's not come in for test yet. We've tested the Samsung PS51D495 and PS51D8000 in our August issue, on sale now.

Thanks for letting me know, Andy :) I've got this months mag, but it's the D6900 in particular that I'm interested in and there's no stockists nearby for a demo. Might just go for the D6530 LCD instead!
