5 year old Onkyo TX-NR717.

Working fine,, then phut! and the smoke* escaped.

Oh well, time to convince Her Majesty $2000 on a new one is desperately needed....

Need (want) 11 channels (7.2.4), Atmos, DTS:X, HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0a, 4K pass-through at 50 or 60 FPS, etc. etc. etc.

Quite happy to use one or more external power amps to drive the front three channels, or the back 2 surround channels, whatever. I have 3 Onkyo stereo power amps I can bridge as needed to drive 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, even 6 channels externally.

Thinking Yamaha RX-A3050 but open to suggestions. Mainstream brands only. If you can get a mainstream receiver make and model in the UK, we can get it here. Speakers it will be driving are, I think, 50 wpc RMS, 150 watts peak, 8 ohms per. Room is 19 feet x 12 feet six, not the Royal Albert Hall.

Which is best for "proper stereo" duty?

Not expecting Cyrus/ Naim/[insert your fave high end brand name here] levels of performance, but something that doesn't sound like it came from an Argos skip would be nice.
I would use a separate stereo power amp to drive "proper stereo" floorstanders until I have the readies for a high end setup again.

1000 ZIMBABWE dollars on their way....

Darn it, foiled by a technicality.
And I deducted the cost of the money order and the postage - so you owe me a tenner :)

All but two (unused / spare) speaker cables run. Our attic must be 120 °F in the afternoons, so the last two get done at sun up tomorrow.
Watching The Martian in glorious 7.2.4, he said smugly.

How's your Atmos experience?

Don't have any Atmos encoded BluRays (that I know of), but watched "The Martian" last night to test things out and the rockets blasting overhead were pretty impressive.

Power output from the 7010 is okay, not brilliant, and it certainly doesn't seem like 125 wpc x 9 as the ad men would like you to believe. Soundandvision.com reports 83 watts per channel with 7 channels driven. I had to turn the volume up to 50% for normal / comfortable sound, would probably have to crank it up much higher to annoy the neighbours. Given the unit only consumes 710 watts RMS through the mains lead, 710/9 = 79 watts, and I don't expect power in = power out by any shot, so I reckon somewhere around 50 wpc with all nine amps going is more like it. Probably enough though, and I can always save my pennies for an Emotiva power amp or two in the years to come.

Also, I haven't figured outif, as I'm using all nine power amp channels, and all 11 decode channels in the media room, if I can actually connect more speakers in "Zone 2" or "Zone 3". I would have liked to set up "Zone 2" as my "proper stereo" speakers in one 3, possibly, in the master bedroom. As it stands, I think I might have to swap plugs to listen to the stereo speakers, which will be a PITA. If anyone knows differently please advise.

I've been told on another forum...

The volume scale is logarithmic but that Atmos saps a lot of power out somehow, and that I can still use the Zone 2 and zZone 3 pre-outs for power amps.
How I switch Zone 1 off or down when I want to listen to the stereo speakers as Zone 2 I have yet to find out...
