Wadia 170i - how can I explain THIS ? (plus Onkyo ND-S1 question please)

I have recently purchased a Wadia 170i Transporter. It is connected to the latest iPod Touch gen4.

When playing, I can STILL use the sound-shaping settings (you know, jazz, rock, classic, lounge...).

I was under the impression that this Wadia extracted pure digial with no interference from the ipod's internal sound processing.

I understand I can always use the flat or disengage the sound shaping in the menu, but somehow I feel even this passes through the ipods sound filters.

ON THE ONKYO unit.

I keep reading that using this will disengage the ipods navigation menus on the ipod itself. Is this only the case when connected to a receiver with digital inputs or would it also apply using a DacMagic. As much as the Onkyo is tempting, I wish to retain control with the ipod's menus on the unit itself.

Many thanks if you can help !!!

Can't help with the Onkyo dock, as haven't used it in ages, but AFAIK the iPod sound filtering is done in the digital domain, so yes those functions will still work when the player is in a 'digital' dock.

It would be a miracle of science and technology if the Onkyo could control the iPod menus when it isn't actually connected to the iPod dock, which is effectively the situation you've got if you're using a DAC with the dock. There's no way for the Onkyo to send the necessary control codes through an analogue RCA connection into the DAC and then on to the dock, so it won't be able to control the iPod, in fact it won't even know there's an iPod connected.

Thank your Andrew for your answer. I guess then my next question would be ''which setting would be truest to the sound of a cd recorded in Wav in the Ipod menu''.

I probably think that the ''flat'' or no setting would be best...

Message to the _Ihc....maybe you have not taken correct note of my post....

With the Wadia connected to my DacMagic, my ipod screen stays the same as well as all my navigation options.

With the Onkyo, am I still getting this benefit ?

I don't know about the touch, but with my Classic 160gb on the ND-S1 I can still use the menus/controller on the iPod without any change.

I had the ND-S1.

Used with both a 3rd and 4th Gen Touch, all screen / menus and navigation work as normal. I think it's the older Classics that loose the screen when put into digital mode.

Hope that helps!

Heya!

The controls on my Ipod Touch 4G work as normal.

However, the remote of the dock behaves a little bit strange. The "next/previous album" buttons both work as "next title" buttons.

I think the Onkyo ND-S1 IS the dock and therefore would be in direct communication with the ipod/iphone.

I stand to be corrected however.
