So am I not allowed to learn? Many of you had to learn at one point how to set a manual tutntable so what gives you the right to tell me that they are not for me? I'm not stupid you know, I do have a college education. I just have no experince with manual turntables.

Yeah but we didn't start by buying £800 turntables and expecting them to come with pre-school level step-by-step instructions on how to use them, such as how to raise and lower the arm. When you're throwing £800 at a turntable from a specialist maker like Rega, the manufacturer makes a fairly reasonable assumption that you're pretty sh-t hot with the basics. That was the final straw that got you labelled as troll and got you banned, along with the very provocative attitude of your post. Can I be honest and admit that I can see where they were coming from, faced purely with the evidence they had to hand. But it's all ended well so that's ok.

Ha! Quite possible, if the water really does go the other way down the plug hole!

Forgot to say I quite like VE forum, particularly for retro or vintage gear.

Hi What Hi-Fi community,

Has anyone ever used the website called Vinyl Engine before? I joined a week ago and I just had an awful experience on there. I been an audiophile for a few decades and have joined so many website forums and never once had a problem before. But the guy running the Vinyl Engine (JaS) is a class N, Nutter. Let me explain.

I'm completely new to manual turntables and I recently bought a Rega RP40. I was/am still having a very hard time setting the Rega up so I joined the Vinyl Engine to ask some questions. In my posts I asked many questions but I also pointed out a few things about Rega that frustrated me. Things that made it hard for as a new person to manual turntables like myself to be able to properly set it up. Such as very limited explanations in the short one page manual, lack of youtube video, lack of provided spirit level and no cheap VTF gauge included with it.

These were honest feelings and opinions that I pointed out in my journey trying to set up this turntable. Keep in mind I was not complaining very much and I was mostly asking questions. I got some good advice from some people who were writing in and being very helpful. In fact everyone who responded to me was very kind and helpful! No one complained about my posts.

So this long weekend I was waiting for some more advice to come in when to my surprise a few days ago I could no longer log into the Vinyl Engine website. I kept seeing people were still writing in and responding to my post. I saw this because I would get email notifications about it, but had to log in to read them. These people probably were giving me some advice that I really needed to complete my turntable set up over this holiday weekend.

The dealer I bought it from is across the country, bought it from him because this was the last RP40 around. I couldn't call him until Tuesday. So I been sitting now for 4 days with a new turntable that doesn't work and I no longer have access to some much needed advice on that website.

So I finally logged into the Vinyl Engine from another location today and I realized that the owner/administrator of the Vinyl Engine must have blocked my access to the website somehow. I say this because I finally read my post from another PC today and JaS responded back to my post basically calling me (eluding very strongly anyways) that I am a liar, a troll and an idiot. Wow! Then he said he was shutting my post down because he felt it was not genuine.

I didn't realize that a Nazi or Communist ran the Vinyl Engine. If I would have known this I would have not joined. There is NO freedom of speech or expression on that website. It is really sad when one guy takes it upon himself to know everything about another person he doesn't know and uses his Supreme Leader powers to shut anyone down he doesn't agrees with or might have not understood properly.

So what I learned from all of this is that you are never allowed to criticise a manufacture, have too many problems, express your feelings about audio, as it might offend someones fragile ego.

I would tell you all of my RP40 turntable problems I been having and ask you all for advice so I can finally play my RP40 but maybe this post will be taken down as well then? Maybe this post will be taken down?

Anyways, the weekend is almost over so I can call someone up tomorrow. Just remember folks, only uplifting posts everyone, hide your feelings, and don't be too honest or the gestapo will come and get you.

What do you expect from people who think "vinyl" is great?

Feel free to have an anti-vinyl attitude, it's your right, but keep it the hell out of the Turntables and LPs forum. No one here asked for your opinion on its worthiness.

MajorFubar,

First of all, in regards to the arm lever, I don't think it's too much to ask for a manufacture to include detailed instructions. Anything else that we purchase comes with detailed instructions. Refrigerator manufactures still include detailed instructions even though I am sure you know how to use one of those.

I don't care if a turntable costs £300 or £3000, your assumption that only turntable experts should buy an £800 table is ridiculous. £800 to one person may not be a lot of money to someone else. Or a person may just want to spend a lot money and buy a nice turntable for their first table.

Secondly, I don't think I should have to keep defending myself about the arm lever question. So this will be the last time I'll do it. Having never used a manual turntable before, my first table was fully automatic, the Rega turntable came with the arm lever in the down position, but the arm was up in the resting position. I did figure up was up and down was down with the lever and arm but that levers down position made me second guess it.

Perhaps Rega tables were opposite? Perhaps I was supposed to set up the arm first with the lever down. I didn't know because this was all brand new to me! So I suppose this was turntable "pre-school" as you like to call it. You didn't start school in the 4th grade did you? You do know there are actually people in this world that don't know anything about manual turntables, believe it or not. I don't think it's going to hurt you to take the time, be nice, and help them out by answering simple questions without becoming angry, skeptical or bitter about it. What seems like second nature to you may not be to another person. All I did was ask an innocent and simple question to be 100% sure as I didn't want to break anything. The turntable police did not have to come knocking on my door about it.

Thirdly, and most importantly, I find that your tone has been rude and your attitude towards me has been condescending and arrogant. Perhaps you are JaS from the VE? I say this jokingly of course, but everyone else on WHF has been very nice and helpful just like everyone on the VE was nice and helpful to me until JaS ruined it all. You two seem to have a lot in common.

Anyways, I am going to keep taking about audio gear now. I just had to take some time here to stand my ground and set you striaght.

I don't know how you can type that. I have been politeness personified and explained both why I felt your criticisms were more than a bit unfair, and also explained why you were banned. It wasn't me who told you that you basically weren't suited to a manual turntable was it? It was me who said, in my very first contribution, that I hope you get it all sorted. You missed that, obviously.

We'll have to basically disagree that a turntable costing £800+ should come with Jackanory instructions like it's been bought by a six year old. And yes, I can still see how your post on VE could be misconstrued as patronising and inflamatory. But I'm also glad that in the end you got it all sorted. Which I've already said once, in a post you condemned as rude.

If you still feel that having clarified my position I'm being rude...well there's not much I can do about that really. Except to say that you definitely wouldn't like me when I'm really being rude.

Enjoy your LPs. *music2*

MajorFubar,

I am sure you were just being "politeness personified " as you say, when you said the following to me.:

"Yeah but we didn't start by buying £800 turntables and expecting them to come with pre-school level step-by-step instructions on how to use them"

"We'll have to basically disagree that a turntable costing £800+ should come with Jackanory instructions like it's been bought by a six year old."

Expecting an apology from you is pointless when you can't even see when you are being condescending and rude.

Good you won't get one, because in my mind all I've done is tell you the way it is. People are getting terrified of speaking their mind these days without upsetting someone. It's like every darn sentence where you disagree with someone has to begin with "I hope you don't mind me saying, but" or "forgive me for saying, but". Unfortunately or fortunately depending which way you look at it, I don't post like that. I just open my mouth and let the words right out. But equally you can take it as read that on this occasion I didn't intend to offend, just to bluntly point out a couple of home truths.

But anyhow...happy listening and enjoy your stay. We all have a common goal and interest here and I'm sure you'll find there's far more we agree on than disagree on.

If I spoke my mind on here, my stay would come to an abrupt halt........many a long walk has been needed before posting. *wink*

It seems to be a trait. Not the first time this comment has been made.

Ah look, rent a mob's turned up. Anything positive to contribute or are you just waiting to throw some barely-hidden sarcasm my way. Ah, the latter. Not like you that. No wait...

Fortunately, I couldn't give a damn for your smart@rse comments. You are one of the few that like to think you sit in a high place. It's folks like you that give this place a bad name. A "mob"? Nah, I suspect just the tip of the iceberg.
