I just acquired the following for £70, to go in my cellar as a 2nd system. Using Panasonic DVD player and file server as a source. Anybody got any experience of these components? Sony TA-FE370 Amplifier Tannoy E11 standmounts. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks Tom

Thanks guys for your replies. It was just a bit of fun and i thought it would be worth taking a bit of a punt on some older kit. It's hardly cost an arm and a leg so if it doesn't sound good the then it's not the end of the world. The kit is only going in the cellar anyway. There is not that much on the Interweb about these. Just seeing if anyone had once or still does own them.

Thanks

Tom

Well guys, all i can say is that i have been very pleasantly surprised. Possibly the best £70 i have ever spent. The amp is immaculate and not bad sounding for the cost, but the speakers are excellent value for money. Apparently they used to be "studio" speakers. All i can say is that they sound pretty damn good for £35. I can't believe how much fun it is looking for bargains on E-bay. Just looking for a CD player to go with the system now. Any suggestions for a matching bargain. Personally i'm looking at some of the older Marantz units. Budget is approx £50, not much i know, but it kinda makes it more fun that way.

Depending on how old you are looking for, the Marantz CD5001 can be had for £80 as a clearance at Richer Sounds, or you can snag a CD52-Mk2 for throwaway money. Maybe not £50 but not much more. Nice full sound - used to have one back in 1994. Old units though, so you might want something a bit newer!

Its only 70 quid and seems perfectly reasonable. I really would'nt worry about it. Build a bar around them and they will sound like the best hifi you've ever had ... after a few perhaps

Great minds think alike. Just bought a mini fridge to stock full of Grolsch! Got the old NES out aswell, complete with Duck Hunt. I agree, i'm not overly bothered as i'm not spending too much but would obviously like the best sound i can get.

Forget the CD player then and stock up on the boozies! You can do your own singing after that!

Just saw a CD52 Mk II Special Edition for £99, so that's a bit more than you were looking to pay. Apparently in excellent condition though.

In that case try to get some MS10i's or 25i's (or was it 20i's?). Anyway probably wont cost you more than £20/40 or so. Great little speakers for the cash of a meal out. Add a Marantz PM66 and the result is great for not much dosh either, perhaps better than your suggested system but I dont know the Sony amp or speakers.

... or another good old one I had in a system ... Denon PM350UK ... it rocks. I'm getting all sentimental here but seriously, its possible to make a good little music system for peanuts

Another thought; if you find one - and there's not many - there's the Kenwood DP7090 from 1997. Had one of these for years and it was a stormer of a player. £400 in its' day, glowing review from WHF and battleship-like build; good deep but crystal clear sound which is very open but analytical. I sold mine for £85 about a year back after I'd bought the Linn and it wasn't much outshone by the latter either.

Cheers again guys! I will keep looking. To be fair the speakers are a bit of a find, very pleased with them. Only problem is i may not be able to stop trawling ebay for bargain Hi-fi. The other half is not going to be happy!

Managed to get a Marantz CD67 mark 2 for £17. Appear to have pretty good reviews. Any experience?

Excellent purchase! An absolute bargain for that price, if it's functioning properly you will enjoy it very much.

After enough cans of Grolsch, even my DVD player sounds good as a CD source!

Sounds like you just solved your dilemma

One of my friends used to own a restaurant. Many a happy night we had in there. I remember his JBL dog poo sized plastic canisters hanging in every corner and some 80's yamaha amplifier with a supermarket brand cd player. Hell, we really enjoyed turning the volume up and listening to Eros Ramazotti after getting slobbered out in town. Very un-audiophile but fun.

Just listened to them again, and i must admit for the money, it's hard not to be impressed! It should certainly do a job as a second system anyway.

Killer deal! No experience of this beyond it followed up the CD63 II but it enjoyed healthy reviews. For £17 you can't argue at all. Enjoy!
