Very well put idc, couldn't agree more. There are also other issues, for example due to the fact my hearing is well below par I often find it a necessity to apply a fair amount of treble boost to a lot of things - wouldn't be able to hear the high notes otherwise.

idc:Then add some hybrid valve amps into the mix as well. The aim being to get the best of both worlds with the lush valve and clinical reproduction of solid state amps. (I am exaggerating with that descriptive to make the point clear).

I have been thinking some time about adding a tube pre amplifier to a solid state amp since i have a tube cd player as my source.

My integrated amp is a dual mono design and the pre and power stage can be used independently, i can add a tube pre amplifier to the power amp stage of that amp, i read that many heard benefits in doing that. Though, some die hard tube fans swear by using tube amplification to hear what tube sound is all about, not sure i personally would like that though. If i would go full tube it has to be something powerful like these...

Allthough it gives the most distortion, some swear by a SET (single ended triode) design for the best sound. It doesn't provide as much power as a push pull design, this one seems to be the most affordable for the power it delivers...

Powerful push pull design...

Fahnsen:I'm a litterary man myself. Say I'm especially fond of stories about old fishermen, or descriptions of dark skies full of stars, or steamy sex scenes. Would I want every novel I read to have all paragraphs containing fishermen, stars or sex printed in bold types? Hardly...

I would have thought the 'unreality' of fiction and poetry would have annoyed such a stickler for digitally etched reality.

I honestly imagined you to be someone who only read factual, scientific/technical/engineering content on an e-book...

Thanks to Fahnsen I now I have an literal image of old fishermen under dark skies having steamy sex. From a discussion about harmonics and valves.

How much power do you need ?. I had a 300B se on dem for 2 weeks, pumping it out big time when i was in the mood. My ears gave up way before the amp even gave a hint that it was about to go mushy.

Power 12.5 watts !!!. Yum yum.

Well, the SACTthailand GM70 SET in parallel amp is 2x 70 watts!! It doesn't cost a car either.

I read from users and proffesional reviewers that use the Hyperion 938 and 968 floorstanding speakers with a Consenance cyber amp of 18 Watts per monoblock with great succes, allthough it sounds magical some do miss a bit af slam and attack in the bass.

Not sure but if i could i would like to compare my ss amp and SET preamp to a full blown SET amp. I'm curious...

Hi,

I actually find valve sound more natural to listen too, and some solid state sound more a produced cold sound lacking body of the valve. I found the valve seems to add more natural warmth and inner harmonics of the instruments and voice.

I have both valve and soild state (S/S) - a S/S seems to be more dynamic and faster - more bass punch/slam, valve seems to add fluidity to the sound especially the mids giving that more 3D soundstage and space/air around instruments and voices. I use S/S power and valve pre which seem to get the best of both worlds.

Cheers,

Steve.

Nice, another poster that is happy with this setup, i should try it. Can you recommend any valve pre amp?

And what do you think about powerfull valve amps? Would they have the benefits you describe of the SS amps or still not in the same league?

I know of a 70 Watt SET amp...

Hi,

I am no expert on valve amps I just listen to them and know a guy who use to make them. I live in Australia and so it maybe hard to recommend certain products. I know cary valve gear and amber valve preamps are good found on audiophile.com.au, trevor lees audio in Melbourne made valve pre amps.

Yes some valve amps can be quite impressive too and have those S/S traits - fast dynamic etc. Valves seems to be coming back - one UK magazine does focus a bit on valves too- hif world. Some valves amps are coming out of china too.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Steve.

Did anyone go into the Audio Note room at the Sound & Vision Show as they are a valve amp specialist from what I understand? I popped in and the sound I heard was definitely one of the nicest, smoothest musical sounds I probably heard all day - and there was some fantastic sounding kit all round the show.

BUT you have to match the speakers carefully as the amp they had playing had only about 9 watts output so the speakers had a very efficient db rating of 98db and the guy doing the demo's said that he has to place the speakers in a corner or near a wall to be able to enhance the bass and the volume. But if you get it right, the sound is amazing.

I am thinking of getting a valve system for another room but I am curious about the hybrid stuff though - does anyone know much about them?

Hi,

There is a miniwatt only about 3-4 watts a channel need efficient speakers though. Gets great reviews - about $250 US.

I just bought a jaycar hybrid valve amp only $100 was $299 AUS ( 18 Watts channel)- amazing sound for that money see audioenz.co.nz forums. There is some nice valve stuff in the UK from www.iconaudio.com

All the best.

Steve.

From browsing forums and reading reviews these Bada hybrid amplifiers are going to be very nice and highly musical...

Was he using the Meishu ? What speakers was he using because if he had to do that then something wasnt quite right with his set up imo, unless of course he did it due to the room being tripe acousticaly

Edit. Pretty sure on the speakers used. I will generously gift him the cop out option of blaming the room
