i have only just had this question pop into my head, as all 4k tv's upscale an image to 4k that are not native, does our viewing distance change for all content? could i see more detail by sitting closer even when watching a "1080p" blu ray which has been upscaled?

The main issue with upscaling is the quality of the upscaling itself. Upscaling a clean 1080p Bluray has the ability of looking much better than a rough looking 1080p Bluray, or any standard def format. Higher res formats do allow you to sit closer to a screen, but that doesn't necessarily mean an upscaled image will allow the same. High quality upscaling maybe.
