Hi,

So I'm looking to upgrade my system from 2006. It currently consists of:

Marantz PM4001

Marantz CD5001

Marantz TT-42

Marantz SD4051

2 x Mordaunt Short 902i

I'm looking at a setup mainly for music but also one that's okay for films as well. I was looking at two Q Acoustic 2050i's as my speakers.

I was wondering what amp would be recommended though. My amp budget will be around 350-400. I assume the rest of the system will be okay to keep, I would obviously like the amp to have phono as well.

I was looking at the Marantz PM6004 but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Thanks,

Jack

If you like Marantz stuff I see no reason not to buy into their current mid-range products, as you have suggested. You could certainly do far worse, they're all highly-regarded. They will give you just more of the same sound you obviously like. And as you probably know, the PM6004 also has a phono-input for your turntable.

Yes, I'd start by comparing the new 6004 amp to yours. New speakers will give different 'colour' but may not be 'better' just different. [Think different wallpaper!] But amps don't necessarily improve that much in 6 or 7 years, despite the hype.

What do you listen to most as a source? If TT, then I'd look for a Rega or Michell or Pro-Ject to upgrade your source.

Well my speakers have been on the way out for an incredibly long time so they definetly need to go.

Also, I like the Marantz sound but the amp belonged to a relative of mine so I inherited it as my system was nowhere near as good. I have a pair of Triple Fi 10's and like the sound they produce if that's any use.

As for the source, I use the turntable a bit but I'm also using a cable from my PC, I have Fibre out on my sound card so I can use that.

I think it looks more like you should start over again! But, maybe try my original thought - take your amp to a dealer to compare with a 6004. If the 6004 is better, get it and some new speakers. If your current Marantz is OK, just get the speakers.

Then have a think about what you want to do for a future source - LP, CD, PC streaming, downloads? - and get a suitable source or device as appropriate.

Thanks nopiano.

I was interested in getting a Marantz device to stream my Spotify premium but it looked liked only the 5.1 systems from them offered this?

There is the mcr 603 that several contributors use here.

If you want 5.1 then better to look in the AV section, rather than hi-fi.
