Dear all,

i´d like to upgrade my PV1 to something with mor controlled (dry and quick) bass. would you go for 2x SPL 1000 Ultra or 1x SPL 1200U? what would you recommend? does someone of you know if the SPL 1000R had an (automatic) EQ on board?
the usage is mainly for cinema. i´d like to get the massiv attack with master & commander but also have the fine & subtle tune of Casino Royal or Knowing... With stereo, i´m often fine wo the sub support.

the room size is 23' x 23' and 10.2' height..

thanks a lot for your recommendations.

I have to say im not a Velodyne expert. I know they are good but you would need to speak to your local Velodyne dealer to get the proper low-down. I can heartily recommend Paradigm subwoofers to do the job should you be open to other suggestions?

I used to own the SPL1200R (predecessor of Ultra), which was a terrific sub with EQ.

If you have a difficult room, need the bass very evenly spread out due to several listeners, or are going to listen to a lot of 2 Channel, then imo go with the two subs.
If it's a simple room and the sub is mostly used for AV, go for the 1200 Ultra.

The suggestion of Paradigm is also excellent....the Seismic 110 has quite a bite......and two of them is even better.

If your budget takes you into Velodyne DD territory, then I would make do with one.

It takes a bit of skill but you can get completely transparent, accurate (Properly Accurate) and non directional bass from one sub and get bass in large quantities from it!

However 2 subs makes it easier I think by what I have been reading other installers do - and its often suggested to have 2 subs. Get home demos there are several dealers who will do this for you.

HSound jumps out as Nick loves Velodyne and his service is excellent.

I personally am not a fan of the 1200 Ultra, it didnt do it for me at all - I have written and argued about this on here at length before but you need to make your own mind up. Most people dont / cant do what I do to / with a sub so thats a big part of it :)

Hi I have just made the jump from the Paradigm Seismic 110 to the velodyne 1200 ultra and found it to be fare better and has way more control with way more output (DB's). Leave it in jazz mode and and there is plenty of bass or if you really want some excitemnt! stuff it in movie mode at the expence of deeper and cleaner bass...... It is my belief that the EQ dose help out in some situations but placement is key and every option must be explored first and measure where possible. But having said that the velodyne is designed from the ground up to utlise its eq so really should be used.

The cone is rock solid and there isnt any exsive movment from it unlike others i have used in the past. I think steping to the seismic 110 from the PV1 will not really give you any benfits at all it may go deeper than the PV1 but you won't notic it much. What you will notice in the bigger subs (velo and SVS) is the impact of the higher bass 26hz and up! Thats is where the difference is! it will shake your world its just somthing 10inch sealed subs can't do (not in the same way anyhow).

All i can say is that the velodyne is thunderous (quick tip! is that i found that it needs a y splitter to get the bet out of it). The SB13 from SVS is really good and has had glowing reviews and i say for pound for pound is the best choice on those grounds but for most rooms and wife approval the thing is massive (which it should be) basically an 18inch cube give or take. The velodyne is fare more acomadating but is still farly big.

But after speaking with Nick at home sound he said if you never listen at reference levels your just not going to get the benifit from it (the svs sb13) thats when the Velodyne came in and i had the same talk about 1 or 2 with Nick and other than smoothing out bass you dont really get any more ouput (in fact no more output) .

The Velodyne is Smaller but is just a capable 95% of the time. In a medium room too largish you need nothing bigger to be honest. Unless you want that super bass thats is the go with the SVS SB13

But what works for me might not work for you! You need to arrange an in home audition if you can and Nick at home sound offers this.... And i live in suffolk no where near edinbourgh and he couldn't be any more adcomadating.
