Upgrading Amp & Speakers

Hi, am new here and need your expert advice.

It is time to replace my 10 year old amp and I was looking at the Onkyo TXNR515.

The question is do I also need to change my 10 year old speakers. I currently have the Sony Pascal 5.1 speaker package (SA-VE705).

I have looked at the Boston Soundware XS SE and Tannoy HTS101 speaker packages. Both are cheaper than the speakers I bought 10 years ago but I guess a lot's changed in that time. Would there be a noticable difference between these and my current speakers?

If I have to replace both then I can stretch the budget to £800.

I've never heard your speakers, so cannot comment on its performance. You could first buy the amp & see how it performs. Demo the amp with a few speaker combinations & compare.

You simply can't go wrong with the 515. Speaker wise I would also be considering Monitor Audio Apex as these fit within your budget, I would also go with the Tannoys over the Bostons absolutely, they're an absolute bargain at their current price. I'm afraid I couldn't say whether it's worth replacing your Sonys though, not having heard them either.

I agree with this, decoding technology has come on massively in the last 10 years and the mordern auto setup features are pretty damn good too so I would start there.

From what I remember of the Pascals, they were roundly slated for being overly bright but I never acutally heard them. The Monitor Audio Vector package can be picked up at a bargain price at the moment so that would be a good option.
