Hi guys and gals, currently looking to upgrade my amp from a Yamaha DSP-AX640SE to something more modern to hopefully get over an issue I have with lip sync between my audio and tv through from my Humax Foxsat box. Tried changing the lip sync settings on both the humax and amp but to no avail. Think it is because the video + audio goes from the humax to the tv by hdmi, and the surround goes to the amp by optical. Am hoping that by getting a new amp with hdmi it would get over this issue.

I have been looking at both the Sony STRDH820 and Cambridge Audio Azur 650R, (or antything other that you can suggest less than 300 and hopefully with auto setup)?

The rest of my setup is, XBOX 360s (1080p over component/optical), DVD player(component/optical), Humax foxsat (1080p through HDMI). Into the amp and out to Samsung 40" LED TV and Boston Acoustic XS speakers.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks for your time.

Chris.

Try to get hold of a Yamaha RX-V671, there should still be some around if you search on the internet, but stocks are disappearing fast. It has been very well reviewed in this magazine and elsewhere, as another search will reveal.

Does the V671 you mention take all inputs (HDMI, component, composite etc) and output them through 1 HDMI as the Azur 650R would, and do this whilst in standby mode?

if you like Yamaha have a look at the Aventage range like the A810 model. Excellent bit of kit & at a good price as the newer versions are about to come out. looking at around £550 on offer. It is worth paying the extra over your budget if you can

Also yams website has a comparison feature which might help you find what amp/budget your looking for

I've not tried the component input, but I've just taken 10 minutes fiddling about with connections between the 42" TV and the RX-V671. The RX-V671 DOES output composite video and audio through HDMI 1. However, it doesn't seem to do that in standby mode. In standby mode it passes through only the last selected HDMI input, not the ordinary AV input. Perhaps there is a setting in the electronic manual that would allow standby passthrough for composite input. You can download the manuals for all Yamaha receivers from the Yamaha UK website.

As tj27 says, if you can stretch to the RX-A810 that would be even better than the RX-V671. However, it is quite a bit more expensive than the RX-V671, even with Richer Sounds having this week reduced the price to £500. Whatever you decide to buy, you really do need to move fast. Stocks are running quite low and soon they will all be gone.
