I am considering upgrading my 2008 42" Panasonic 720p plasma to a 55" or 65" oled. I am sitting 8.5' from the screen. The 65" seems a bit much when I view it in my local store, but maybe it will feel more natural at home when I get used to it. Is the 55" a more logical step up?

We sit almost exactly that distance from our 2021 LG OLED 55” tv.

You will find you quickly adjust, so it may depend on the surrounding furniture and overall size of your room. You can Google several guides on suggested viewing distances*. With HD content it’s plenty sharp enough, and 4K is a step up. SD is pretty poor though imo.

* like this, which suggest 65” is fine...

Stand 8.5' feet away from the screen in your local TV shop. That should give you an idea. However, if you do get one that's 'too big', you'll soon get used to it.

55 inch TCL or Hisense are the favourite ones if can only afford up to £400 Consider LG with a satellite tuner too . it is all about what you can afford to replace a PLASMA i am still using both PLASMA at the moment Panasonic 50 /46 2010/11 models. Sounds are not that important to me to be honest ( hollow walls here) There 2021 model 550inch TCL is a games machine and is OLED is without doubt the best TV for the money under £400
