I intend purchasing a HD ready plasma tv (Panny PX80B). My current dvd player is SD and does not have hdmi connection. All my dvds are SD and I don't foresee myself getting many HD dvds in the near future.

Is it worth buying a new SD dvd that has a hdmi connection i.e. is there much difference between hdmi and scart for sd dvds on a hd ready tv.

Would a HD dvd player upgrade my SD dvds to any noticeable effect on a hd ready tv?

TIA

An upgrade is def the way forward. Borrowed a friends hdmi player and there was an improvement. I only watch SD and DVD on my 37 PX80 and it is much better on HDMI. I plan to add an Onkyo 606 amp so that I can upscale the pics from Eurovox box.

PS3 is a popular option on these forum pages as it gives you DVD and Blu Ray playback with the higher sound quality options. There's also the option of games and the web to peruse !

Thanks for that.

How noticeable is the difference, and what sort of hdmi player did you use? I might fork out £100 - £150 for a new HD dvd player if I know that the quality of SD dvds will look better.

A shop (can I mention names?) in Bolton is selling the Panny 42PX80B for £654 with the manufacturer's guarantee for 5 years. They will not do this over the phone, I actually have to go to the store to do the deal. I live about a 100 miles away, so if I do go there, I might get myself a new dvd player as well, just to make the trip worthwhile.

I am considering going to Johl Lewis and asking for a price match, but I'm not sure that the 5 year guarantee they give, is as good as the manufacturers guarantee.

Sounds along way to go but well worth it.Try to find a Panny dealer nearby because they are all doing the warranty til the end of June.

I got mine from a place in Birmingham and you send off for the warranty yourself. The JL warranty may be better for instant service but the Panasonic paperwork states you will get a replacement or a loan tv while yours is repaired.

As far as the DVD difference goes it is a very marked difference. You can get a decent HDMI player for 100 pounds but a Blu Ray player will be more in the region of 200 pounds and these play both !! Put the search in above to find the numerous threads relating to the best to buy.

Good luck

I think that I will get the TV, run it in for a 100 hours or so and then decide what to do.

From what I've read, the TV will do some upscaling anyway. So the question that I will have will be:

how much better will a HDMI player (with HDMI leads) be, than my current dvd player going through SCART.

Id gor for the samsung 1400 blueray player £200 at richer sounds. Great value, half decent blueray player and will upscale your dvd,s too. Makes a lot more sense than spending £100-150 on hdmi dvd player.
