I have been considering an upgrade to my system for a while now and im looking for some advice on where my next step lies.

At present i have a yamaha ax 396 amp with kef cresta 3s and gale gold monitors speaker cable to the kefs linn k20 and to the gales qed silver anniversary my main source for music is my home pc.

Now whilst the sound is still good from the system i want to go a little better, im set on a pair of mordaunt short mezzo 6 but it does saay that it needs to be paired with an amp very carefully. What price range of amplifiers should i be looking at and more so which ones would be the best for matching the mordaunt shorts.

I know that i have to go audition before buying first but i need an idea of what to audition the speakers with.

I seem to remember it being a bad idea to partner those speakers with bright sounding kit. To that end it's probably best to match them with either warmish or neutral sound stuff. Two names that spring to mind are arcam and audiolab. An Arcam A90 might do the trick for you, I ask for demo with the two together I see one for £740 on google. For a bit more you could probably get yourself an Audiolab 8000Q and two 8000M monoblocs. You'd get change from a grand for that. I doubt either amp configuration would fail to impress but I'd suspect you'd prefer the audiolab...

Yeah i did read that it was bad to partner speakers with bright equipment, my initial thought had been marantz but when i saw those speakers my thinking is to build system around them instead.

The audiolab solution would be ideal however i would like my units to match up with the rest of my system and be black, i had also thought about a surround sound amp with the mordaunt shorts as main front speakers or is this just a bad idea.

well you can get the audiolabs in black, but it you are going to mix it in with other components of a surround system then you will either need to gain match or gain compensate on the processor.

The entire 8000 range from audiolab have gains of 29dB (the power amps).
