Hello,

My "hifi" is consisting of Pioneer A-307 amp, sabre dac es9023 and 2 sets of speakers. I would like some opinion on them.
The first are nokia hifi 8903 ( 70W/100W, 8Ohm, 40 - 20000, it was bought in 90s, weight 5.5kg) and the second are hitachi LS 340 ( 30W/50W, 4Ohm, 40 - 20000, dated 1978, weight 7kg), nokia speakers were part of hi-fi set (casette, cd, radio, amp + speakers) and about hitachi i am not sure. Nokia set was about 300€ (300$) when new and Hitachi set was owned by my grandpa, my uncle tells me in its time the set wasn't very cheap.
Obviously neither speakers are anything to write about, i can barely find their picture online. But if i have a choice, how can i know which are better ? I have been using the Hitachi speakers for probably 2 years now and have gotten used to them. Today i tried nokia speakers and i didnt really like them, to much bass and much less detail it seemed (even though the smallest cone on 1 hitachi speaker isnt working), but was hard to compare since on same volume hitachi's are much louder due to lower ohms. I was sure that nokia speakers would be better since they are much newer. So how am i to know ? And if and when i decide to buy new speakers, how will i know they are better then my old hitachis ?

You've answered your own question in your own thread my friend.it's whatever sound YOU like and not what everyone else likes as it's you that's got to listen to it.As for searching for new speakers at a later date....you need to go and demo some and again it's what you like the sound of,not a case of which ones are the most expensive is better, just use your ears.compile a short list of some within your budget and go and enjoy the experience,it's fun.

I know that what sounds good and what bad can be somehow subjective but surely some speakers are "good" and some simply aren't. Otherwise i don't think i will ever be buying new speakers, i mean i would hate to spend 100 or 200 euros/dolars and not know whether sound will be better than with my ancient speakers. When and if i do decide to upgrade speakers i will probably be buying second hand ones so there won't be much chance to test them and even if i do it won't be with my amp. I guess i could always read some reviews online and trust them.

Again i must say i am surprised that hitachis play better then nokias. Granted, nokia isn't known for their hi-fi components while hitachi kinda is, but that nokia really looked quality made and is much newer then hitachi. Hitachis look like they will crumble any minute but they really play nicer, i am thinking if i should try and repair the smallest cone on 1 of my speakers. And i am really interested how much my grandpa paid for hitachi set.
