Hello

I have a new Smart TV Model: Samsung UE48H 6400AK

I want to play the sound through my Marantz HiFi Amp Model: PM330 when I watch action films on Dvd, the problem is Phono to Phono just does not seem to work. I know my amp is old but its still good, and I know its all optical now but they must be a way? Any Ideas?

I have been into Tv settings and selected external speakers without success? I currently have a soundbar connected via an optical lead but I crave for the stereo sound I used to enjoy with my old anologue tv.

If your TV has RCA (phono) sockets and so does your amp, then you should be able to connect these directly. Make sure you're using the Aux or Tape inputs on the amp (not the phono - or gramophone as we used to call them - inputs). If you're unsure the Aux inputs on your amp are working, try plugging a CD player or soemthing else into them first.

If you don't have sky or other digi box with rca out,I think you might need to get a hold of a dac that'll take a optical in and then a pair of rca cables to the amp.I use an Arcam ir dac which can do this but is a bit on the pricey side,I'm sure there are cheaper units available, but a digi box with rca out connection will probably be the most inexpensive option. These options only if your TV has no rca out obviously.

Just one more thought.

On both of my new and newish Samsung TVs you have to select which speakers you want the sound to come out of - TV speakers, line out, soundbar or receiver.

Try playing with the TV setup as well before you shell out on a new DAC.

A simple look at the specs of this TV would indicate that it does not have an analogue out. So your suggestion, though cheap, is not possible.

Audio out by optical only I am afraid.

However it does have a headphone socket that might be utilised.

in that case I'd get something like the cheapest FiiO DAC (D03 or something like that, unless they've come out with a new version) and then RCA from the DAC to amp. The DAC is cheap but I think you should be satisfied with the sound. I've used one for music into active speakers and have now switched it to TV duties.

I had the same problem with my LG: No analogue outs. I was lucky in that I had a Sky box, so I ran a HDMI from the TV to the box and interconnects from the Sky box to the amp.

A neat workaround. If the DVD player has RCA outs you may need to change the sound settings so that it outputs sound via those rather than HDMI or other options. If using optical out on the TV or DVD player you may also need to check that it is outputting in PCM in order for an external DAC to work.

Before deciding that method, I tried using the headphone socket. Far from successful for two reasons: First, the SQ from the TV headphone socket was rubbish. Second, because it came direct from the TV you had to change the volume on the TV and amplifier. Too much faff for my liking.

My Panny Blu-Ray player has analogue outs but still needed fettling to change from basic 5.1 to 2-channel.

My bad about the outputs. Didn't have time (at work) to read the manual on line.

My main point, however, was about being sure to check which audio output setting was selected on the TV. Again, I haven't got time to read the TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY SEVEN PAGE manual here at work, so if that doesn't apply either, apologies again.

It seems, therefore, that the best route IS to go with a modest external DAC, and the FIIO D3 looks ideal. Otherwise you're getting into hifi DAC territory.

i have an ancient Samsung plasma, I run a hdmi lead from the TV to the sky box, then run stereo rca leads from the sky box to the amp. That works for me. I don't have to mess around switching stuff, when I use the nowtv box, or laptop, the sound automatically works.

Thank you for all your comments, I have purchased a Prozor DAC Model PST-DAC01 for just £13.99 from Amazon, and it works a treat I dont even have to go into speaker settings and change output.I have a Toslink/spdif lead from tv optical out to DCA unit then phono RCA out leads to my HiFi amp. Please note unit is powered by a USB soarce which my Tv has.
Thanks again for all the advice.

Hello Benedict_Arnold

Thank you again for help with TV sound through HiFi, I now have another puzzle, My wife prefers to listen to dvd's with sound through soundbar, not HiFi, but to get the sound from my Tv to my HiFi I had to take Toslink lead from back of soundbar and connect it to a DAC converter with RCA leads to amp,

So I thought I could do a similar set up with soundbar to DVD player via another toslink lead,, the problem is when I looked at back of the DVD player there was no Toslink connection? There was a digital out via coaxial. so I thought I could connect DVD player to soundbar using another DAC converter and a coaxial lead in and RCA out to soundbar but it does not work.

Any Ideas what I am doing wrong?

PS. The DVD player model is a Sony BDP-S5200/BM & Soundbar is a Panasonic SC-HTB65.
