TV Resolution does it dictate HD or SD or is there some other defining element....

My Plasma TV has a resolution of 1024x768 lines. Does this mean it can play 720HD? My apple TV when i switched to HD didnt work, the TV doesnt have HDMI so I was using component. However I was told the PS3 would work?

So is it HD capable, I personally doubt it but I would like an expert opinion. thanks

That's the maximum resolution it can display. However, you may well find it can accept 1080p material and downscale it to that resolution - most new TVs can, but if yours is lacking HDMI, it sounds like quite an old one. What's the make and model?

The PS3 will definitely work as you can set that to output at 720p. I'd be surprised if you can't do the same with the Apple TV - I know my Dad has one and he has a 720p panel and it works fine.

oh the model is panasonic vier TH42 something i got it a year before the HD ready tv's started coming out... well my dad got it

Hard to help further without the full model number of the TV - have a look on the back when you get back and you should see it.

Also, just downloaded the Apple TV manual, page 15 says:

If you see just a black screen the first time you use Apple TV, make sure the input you've selected on your TV matches the input you've plugged the cables into on your TV or receiver. If the input matches, you might need to select a screen resolution your TV supports. See "Problem? No problem." on page 27 and refer to the documentation that came with your TV for information about its inputs.

Page 30 of the "Problem? No problem" section details this:

If your TV screen still appears fuzzy or black, you may need to select a video mode your TV supports. To select a video mode:
1 Press and hold both MENU and + on the Apple Remote for about 6 seconds.
2 Press + or - on the Apple Remote to cycle through the display resolutions.
3 When Apple TV reaches an acceptable display resolution and "If you can see the Apple logo, select OK" appears on your TV screen, press Play/Pause .
