Turntables outselling CD players

Not really surprised. Lots of people have cottoned onto the fact that in the same price range, turntables do sound better than the equivalent CDP.

Funny that, I just bought a turntable (never interest in them before). Sound very good too considering the lower cost comparing to highend digital playback but the downside is the price of 180g records!

I'm very surprised at the figures, but I know I will never buy another CDP, this is the last one and it was bought because of the digital input/DAC usability. Hence also the DAC upgrade. Here for keeps if it doesn't blow up.

Well, I did my best to redress the balance today, walking out of Frank Harvey (HiFix) with a new Rega Saturn - thanks to you, Mauro, for your patience and friendliness! Unfortunately, I didn't meet David as he was out delivering a plasma screen to Gatwick Airport, I believe.

The Saturn is just so sweet sounding, taming all the hardness that I was getting with my trusty Arcam CD72. The Apollo was OK but sounded a lot thinner to my ears and an Arcam CD37 sounded uncannily like my 72 (rather surprised). I was glad of that, as it saved me a whole heap of dosh - HiFix are doing the Rega at a fantastic price ATM.

I've been 'running in' the new player all afternoon and evening, listening to all sorts when I arrived home a little earlier - Mahler, Monteverdi, Stacey Kent, Cara Dillon. It has to be on the gentle side to avoid waking the kids!

Hi-Fi system is now Rega Saturn, Leema Pulse, Quad 12L2 (with Chord Carnival bi-wire cables), which seems to be sounding very good indeed 🙂 Adding the Leema via pre-outs from my Yamaha RX-V3800 and now the Saturn has made a huge difference.

ah , but if it wasnt for computer based music , would turntables be outselling cdps ? unlikely ...

. It was actually to a guy who used to work for KEF many many years ago. Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you, maybe next time

I've been saying for a long time that the Saturn is one of the finest players under £1k, and probably will be for some time to come. The only other one is the Naim CD5i. Those are the two standout players for me.

We're still finding the turntable market quite healthy, with Rega sales seeming to be rising, and Michell being very good, even at their price point. I think we've sold more turntables in the past week than all other products put together and that's saying something!

Given that people can use so many different devices to play cds (computer, DVD-player, car-player etc) its not that surprising the dedicated cd players are showing a drop in sales...together with a renewed interest in vinyl...

Would be nice to see some numbers on DAC's too!

DAC and turntable sales is prolly the way of the future however i suspect many find the DAC's in the receivers they buy to be good enough.

I hope the industry will focus abit more on the 2 channel performance of their receivers and why the heck has NAD not made a DAC yet??

Well a good-looking turntable makes for great furniture.

I don't understand the resurgence in sales against good CDPs. I miss the LP artwork but not the sound - heard my local Rega dealer's system at his home - not sure which one - but with Valve Audio amp and big B&W 702 speakers. Did not do much for me.

That said our Technics setup sounded wondrous all those years ago.

I suspect that most people buying USB turntables are doing so to 'back up' (And probably to listen to digitally either via a harddrive or a cd) their records, as they already have cd players (Id be one of them, I havnt owned a record deck in years, but I do have records)

This is really interesting, Ive been considering a record deck myself. Does anyone know of any good online outlets that sell vinyl?

I agree with the above comments that turntables could be a blip as they are used to import vinyl onto PC and sales will fall away as that is done.

Thankfully there is a good supply of 'new vinyl' stores appearing online like What Records and Juno Records to name two. Yes the price of new vinyl is not especially cheap but with a healthy second-hand market, the future for vinyl (even as a niche market) should be good.
