Turntable design oddity

Just when you thought turntable design couldn't go any further......
Funny you mention that, I had seen that on my phone app yesterday. It is weird but I kind of like the minimalistic approach to the design.

You just drop your record into the slotted circle and the stylus meets the groove from the inside of the record. Perhaps instead of a cartridge, they employed an optical led reader or laser beam, that I'm sure would have won over the diehard Bruce Willis's digital anoraks.
I suspect there's a market for that in Aussieland.
How reliable is it and does it have questionable sound quality? Still, you have to admire the simplicity, just drop it in and it plays like a CD.

Reminds me of the Wheel 2 by Miniot.

Would be interesting to know how the pickup / cartridge works.
Even the DS Audio optical pickup needs groove contact to work.
For the price it would have to be good and foolproof as assume no means of upgrading.
