Technics SL1500C Has 2 output choices:
1) Phono (and has an earth lead)
2) Line

I was advised to use the Line output of deck and phono of Amplifier (Arcam SA30).

I plug the line into the Arcam Phono (MM) sockets and I get background noise straight away. Then when I try to play a record its very loud and distorted.

I have not used the earth lead.

Is my amp faulty or should I be using phono??

I would be most grateful for advice.

You should not be using line out of the Technics into the phono input of the Arcam.

Technics phono out into Arcam phono in.
Or
Technics line out into Arcam line in.

You can then decide which of the two options sounds better to you.
@Gray is correct.
What you are currently doing is amplifying the cartridge signal twice.
No wonder it's noisy.
Whoever gave you the "advice" should be promptly ignored.... 🙂
Always an issue when someone buys a turntable with inbuilt phono preamp when they don't actually need it.....
On another matter the earth lead is there to be used.

If the op wishes to bypass the the 1500c phone stage they may have forgotten to the toggle switch on the back.
The advice is not bad per say but the OP or whoever has forgot a step.

though the id be include to use the one in the 1500c it designed from the ground up for the 1500c and optimised for it, its very fine sounding.

If we believe the advice the OP said he was given, then the advice is very bad because it's completely wrong 😉

Just as well he hasn't damaged his speakers.
(Best to read supplied instructions rather than rely on advice of course, but that's not the point).
Similar to the Cyrus post I suppose. Read the manual if you’re not sure.
