Technics SL1500C Has 2 output choices:
1) Phono (and has an earth lead)
2) Line

I was advised to use the Line output of deck and phono of Amplifier (Arcam SA30).

I plug the line into the Arcam Phono (MM) sockets and I get background noise straight away. Then when I try to play a record its very loud and distorted.

I have not used the earth lead.

Is my amp faulty or should I be using phono??

I would be most grateful for advice.

You should not be using line out of the Technics into the phono input of the Arcam.

Technics phono out into Arcam phono in.
Or
Technics line out into Arcam line in.

You can then decide which of the two options sounds better to you.
@Gray is correct.
What you are currently doing is amplifying the cartridge signal twice.
No wonder it's noisy.
Whoever gave you the "advice" should be promptly ignored.... 🙂
Always an issue when someone buys a turntable with inbuilt phono preamp when they don't actually need it.....
On another matter the earth lead is there to be used.

If the op wishes to bypass the the 1500c phone stage they may have forgotten to the toggle switch on the back.
The advice is not bad per say but the OP or whoever has forgot a step.

though the id be include to use the one in the 1500c it designed from the ground up for the 1500c and optimised for it, its very fine sounding.

If we believe the advice the OP said he was given, then the advice is very bad because it's completely wrong 😉

Just as well he hasn't damaged his speakers.
(Best to read supplied instructions rather than rely on advice of course, but that's not the point).
Similar to the Cyrus post I suppose. Read the manual if you’re not sure.

Definitely phono out of the Technics to phono in of the amp and switch set to off (the switch furthest away from the plug - the closest one is for the auto-lift).

Also, if it is of any help, there is a little "hidden" auto-off setting in the Technics. If you toggle the tonearm auto lift switch to off, then toggle it to on again while pressing simultaneously the 33 and 45rpm buttons, it will enable not just the tonearm auto lift at the end of a record, but will also make the platter stop spinning (and, it seems, the whole TT to switch off - the latter function I am not to sure about but hey).

Many thanks to all who replied. I have now connected phono to phono + attached earth wire + switched the white switch at the back>>>>and the sound is good. Much appreciated - thanks.

Only played about 5 records so far but none of them lift off at the end. So need to investigate that.

(My old deck was a Technics SL1300 and was fully automatic - lifted off at the end no problem)

It does take a while. I had read 30 seconds - not measured it with just the auto-lift, but since doing the full auto off I have (in my head) and it is more like a minute...

So it rarely kicks in for me, but still good to know that if I ever forget (I can't "just" listen to music, I am always also doing something else, like right now) it's there as a safety net.

That seems to be a long time for an auto off facility, however if you find it useful all is good.

Yes I do.

Anyway, on another note, you don't get to agree with someone berating me and then continue "chatting" with me as if nothing happened.

I am funny like that, you see...

So what I said to Dave or whatever his name was applies also to people who liked his comment - which sole aim was to, as above, berate /make fun of me.

So long...

If you think that's berating you're on the wrong forum.
I was sincere in that some people require functions that others wouldn't, and I was stating the obvious, not chatting, simple as.
Please feel free to "ignore" me if you wish that way you cannot stop people posting comments but you don't have to read them.

Ridiculous. It's a forum, what do you expect? Please feel free to ignore me too. I've had plenty of spats with members in the past but I'd never hit the ignore button on any of them. I value everyone's experience and advice far more than my fragile feelings. If you are this way inclined then forum's are not for you.

My thanks for your comments.
I do try to assist rather than offend however some members are clearly a tad to tender to realise that, you, in your various guises, have been around long enough to hopefully appreciate that.

Ah OK.

I didn't understand that this being a forum, I should expect people to like comments which are exclusively and unprovoked patronising comments and personal attacks towards another forum user (as the comment in question, which made no other point but to pass me off as a simpleton or an "audiophool".)

Gotcha.

And actually not just I should expect it but also welcome it and dare not complain about it!!!

Yes yes yes of course. How silly of me to think that a forum is a place where you come to exchange ideas and opinions whilst respecting other users as you would in real life!

Maybe I am indeed a simpleton!
