Hi all

I was bought a crosley for a birthday and it's awful for sound. I have the vinyl bug and have dusted down some speakers and a technics amp that work well. I am in the market for a turntable, needs to be under £200. Any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome, David! I'm afraid you've discovered the hard way that a Crosley is no way to enjoy records.

Something from Project is a great way to begin. For example:-

Your Technics amp most likely has a phono stage (to boost and equalise the signal). If the amp input selector knob says turntable or phono you should be ok. If not, look for a turntable with that built in too, such as this.

I hope that helps.

Welcome to the record bug. As said above, you've been given a dog of a turntable – no doubt with the best of intentions – but there is much better out there! I'd absolutely agree with the suggestion of a Pro-ject at under £200. The other main competitor in that sort of price range is Rega, but their entry-level turntable is a bit over £200, and according to most reviews I've read, the Pro-jects edge it for performance at that price. I should add that I haven't actually heard them; I'm just going on what I've read.

Flexson are made by Rega, which means it will have a better tonearm than those on the equvalent Pro-ject.

Personally, I'd either go secondhand, or wait a bit and go for something at the Rega Planar 3 level. If you do the latter, you'll not need to upgrade for decades so it is the cheaper option in the long run.

Project turntables offer great vfm but get the best you can afford and ditch the cart asap and get something from audio technica at around £100 or stick with ortofon....the 2m blue is the sweet spot in the range for that level of turntable. You will not believe the difference a decent mm cart can make to a budget turntable.
