Trouble deciding setup with Active Monitors

I've got a pair of Adam A7X's connected via a focusrite scarlett 2i2 for use with audirvana with my computer. Now that I've moved house and my housemate already has a pair, I'd like to use these for a hi-fi setup.

My question is, as i'm not using a computer interface anymore, more likely RCA input, do I

1. Connect directly to the speakers - unbalanced with RCA

2. Buy a preamp with rca input and XLR out or;

3. Buy a DAC with RCA input and XLR out

It seems there are many different options to choose from, including equipment featuring both a pre-amp and dac. I guess I'd like to have a sole unit that I can switch sources, whether it be digital or rca and use as a dedicated volume control, like that I did with the scarlett. Any recommendations on what to buy? I was looking at the Emotiva dc-1 but thought it might be overkill.

I wouldn't get too hung up about insisting on using an XLR connection. RCA is just fine.

i guess it really depends on what your sources are and the number and types of connection you need. Will a DAC/pre with just digital inputs suffice or do you need it to be able to act as a preamp for analog inputs too.
