I am thinking of getting a 37 inch 1080 (full HD) TV but many seem to be very large and the ones that are smaller and priced around 600 pounds such as the Toshiba Regza 37XV505DB are 50H. Do you know if this is a good TV as the 40 inch was well reviewed and also whether having a 50hz as opposed to 100hz will make much difference?

Your views are apprecitated?

Thanks

If you want a 37" and your on a budget, then you need to seriously consider the Panasonic TH37PX80 (best buy 37" on this site).

100Hz, 24p playback, SD card, excellent motion, blacks, colours, contrast ......

Under £600.

Thanks for the reply - I heard about the PANASONIC PX-80 which I know is priced in the same range, but how does it stack up considering its not a full 1080p picture.

Is this swings and roundabouts in that the Toshiba is a 1920x1080 but with 50hz and the Panasonic is a 1024x720 with what I think is a 100hz. Please clarify as its very boggling and various sretail tores have not given me a clear answer. It is not helped by the fact that I have found it hard to track down an independent review for the Toshiba.

Thanks

Suggest you go and look at a couple of screens at your chosen viewing distance. Unless you sit very close to your TV you are not going to see any difference between 720 and 1080 on these smaller screens.

And numbers of pixels is not the most important aspect. Colours, contrast, blacks, motion handling all combine to make a better picture.

Thanks - From what you seem to be saying is that it doesnt matter if it is 1080 or not, the basis is the quality of the overall t.v. I also am aware you can upscale pictures via DVD players to 1080.

However, I have viewed both sets but am thinking in the long-term when more will be broadcast on 1080. To clarify, given the Toshiba is a good contrast ration 1:18,000 etc and referring to my original point, are you saying it does not matter if it is a 50hz?

Best Wishes

What are you going to be watching most of the time? If you are still going to be watching a lot of SD then I would go with the HD ready. The Panasonic has very good reviews for handling both SD and HD. Unless you are going to be sitting very close, I doubt you will notice the difference.

waltb:To clarify, given the Toshiba is a good contrast ration 1:18,000 etc and referring to my original point, are you saying it does not matter if it is a 50hz? Best WishesThe Toshiba contrast ratio is a "dynamic" contrast, The Panny has an "actual" contrast on the screen of 15,000:1.

The HDVTest review says the Toshiba is let down by the blacks, contrast and poor viewing angle. Though it thinks it is a good budget TV and gives it a Qualified Recommedation.

As with most LCDs it will suffer from motion blur and the best LCDs have some motion trickery running at 100Hz to try to compensate for these problems.

The PX80 is Best Buy 37" on this site and is Highly Recommeded by HDVTEST (albeit the 42").

You pay your money and take your choice. I'm probably biased, I have the PX80.
